Police: Man Stabs Roommate, Attempted Robbery at Check Cashing Business

In this week's crime log, police investigate a stabbing, a false missing persons case, robberies and burglaries.

The following is a summary of calls made to and arrests made by the Newark Police Department between Sept. 5 and Sept. 11.

Attempted Robbery of Check Cashing Business

Police are looking for a man after an attempted robbery was reported at the on Thornton Avenue at 8 a.m. on Sept. 7. Police said the would-be robber approached a woman with his face covered as she was opening the business and handed her a note that said he had a gun, but no gun was seen. He is described as approximately 5-foot-7 with a medium build and of dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and black pants and left on foot going westbound on Thornton Avenue.

Man Stabs Roommate

A 56-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats after a man came to the and said he was fighting with his roommate in their home on Thornton Avenue when he was stabbed on his right hand. The victim’s injury was deemed non-life threatening and the 56-year-old man was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

Lightning Shuts Off Power

Friday night’s lightning storm significantally damaged transformers on Thornton Avenue between Willow Street and the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge, causing a power outage for some Newark residents. Police helped with traffic control as PG&E personnel worked on fixing the damage, and power was up and running at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

False Missing Persons Report

A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public at after police responded to Motel 6 to investigate a possible missing persons case. The man had said his wife and kids had been missing for a year, but officers learned the family is not missing and that the man had been restrained from contacting the family, according to the police report.

Violent Crimes

Three reports of battery were called into the Newark Police Department on Sept. 11: at 3:22 p.m. on Mowry Avenue, 4:38 p.m. on Parkside Place and 7:18 p.m. on Olive Street.

Burglaries, Robberies and Theft

Two reports of a stolen vehicle were called into the Newark Police Department on Sept. 9. One was reported at 9:37 a.m. on Cedar Court and the other was on Mowry Avenue at 1:35 p.m.

Two burglaries were reported on Sept. 9. One was called into the Newark Police Department from Lake Boulevard at 3:24 a.m. and the other was called in from the Newark Plaza at 8:34 p.m.

A minor was arrested and cited on suspicion of petty theft at Central and Birch avenues on Sept. 9.

Four burglaries were reported to the Newark Police Department on Sept. 8, three of which were on Cedar Boulevard at 6:24 a.m., 7:54 a.m. and 8:29 a.m. The other report was called in from Joaquin Murieta Avenue at 10:48 p.m.

Four reports of burglaries were called into the Newark Police Department on Sept. 5. Two were reported on Mirabeau Drive at 8:59 a.m. and 10:21 a.m. Another was reported on Starflower Street at 11:07 a.m. and a fourth on Mowry Avenue at 2:14 p.m.

Drugs and Alcohol

A 36-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and a syringe on Sept. 9. She was booked into Fremont Jail.

A 31-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs  at Cedar and Mowry avenues on Sept. 6. She was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of riding a bicycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs on Sept. 6. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

A 53-year-old woman was arrested and cited on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs at Thornton Avenue and Blacow Road on Sept. 5.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public at the restaurant off Thornton Avenue on Sept. 5. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

A 22-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on Edgewater Avenue at Severn Drive on Sept. 5. She was booked into Fremont Jail.
