Police: Man Arrested in Series of Hit-and-Runs

Also in this week's police log: battery on police officers, masked robbers and two citizen's arrests

A summary of calls made to the Newark Police Department May 1-8:

Alcohol and Drugs

A 23-year-old man was arrested and booked at Santa Rita Jail after he swung at a police officer at the  about 4:15 a.m. on May 7, according to the police report. He was arrested on suspicion of battery, resisting arrest and public drunkenness.

A 25-year-old Fremont man was arrested at 8:10 a.m. on May 7 on suspicion of drunken driving (DUI). In a separate incident,  55-year-old man was arrested at 7:50 p.m. the same day on suspicion of being drunk in public.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after police responded to calls of a series of hit-and-run collisions that began on Ruschin Avenue and ended on Cherry Street on May 6. The man was also arrested on suspicion of driving without a license, driving under the influence (DUI) and hit-and-run. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail. Police said three cars were hit, but no injuries were reported. 

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) after police responded to an automobile accident on the 5500 block of Music Avenue at 7:15 p.m. on May 2. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail.

Theft

Two men robbed a Newark resident of his wallet and a small amount of cash about 11 p.m. on May 3 on Joaquin Murieta Avenue. One was armed with a handgun. No injuries were reported. The two men were wearing masks and fled on foot. They were last seen running north through a condominium complex toward .

Fraud

A 23-year-old woman was arrested at 6:30 p.m. May 2 in connection with the passing a forged check at the in Newark Square shopping center, police said. She was also arrested on suspicion of burglary and being in possession of crack cocaine, methamphetamine, a crack pipe and a syringe. She was booked at Santa Rita Jail.

Citizen's Arrests

A citizen's arrest was made at after a 55-year-old man trespassed at the EZ-8 Hotel off Cedar Boulevard, police said. The man was brought to Santa Rita Jail where he spat on a police officer and deputy, according to the police report. He was arrested on suspicion of battery on a police officer and trespassing.

A Newark woman placed a 39-year-old man under citizen's arrest for vandalism and making threats against a citizen after she saw him going through charitable donations placed in front of her home for pick-up, police said. The man threatened the woman during the incident, according to the police report. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail.
