Police Log: Robbers on Bikes; DUI Crashes; Drunk Arrested Twice

Auto thefts, shoplifters, and more from Nov. 22 to 30.

The following are significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Nov. 22 to 30 as released by the Newark Police Department.

Saturday, Nov. 30

  • Drunk in public. Two men, a transient, 47, and a Newark man, 57, were arrested for alleged public intoxication at 3 p.m. at Carl’s Jr. on Thornton Avenue. (This marked the Newark man's second arrest in a week. See Nov. 24 entry.) 
Friday, Nov. 29
  • Black Friday shoplifters. At 8:23 a.m., the citizen's arrest for suspected petty theft of a Fremont woman, 39, was accepted at Macy’s. And at 12:13 p.m. also at Macy's, a Hayward woman, 42, was cited for alleged  theft.  
  • An attempted robbery by two men on bicycles was reported at 5:15 p.m. near Lido Saigon Seafood Harbor restaurant on the 35000 block of Newark Boulevard. The two suspects -- described as black and Hispanic, and wearing dark clothing  -- attempted to pull a bag of merchandise from the hands of the victim. They rode off after their unsuccessful attempt. 
  • A minor-injury collision was reported at 10:34 a.m. at the intersection of Newark and Cedar boulevards.  One involved party was transported after temporarily losing consciousness. 
Thursday, Nov. 28
  • A window-smash commercial burglary occurred around 3 a.m. at Pho Saigon Noodle & Grill on the 6100 block of  Jarvis Avenue with approximately $200 stolen from the register. 
Wednesday, Nov. 27
  • Knife arrest. A Newark man, 25, was arrested for alleged possession of a dirk/dagger at 2:49 a.m. at the Bridgeport Apartments on Cherry Street following a disturbance call. 
  • Warrant assist. Shortly after noon, officers assisted Fremont Police Department detectives with a search and arrest warrant at a home on the 6200 block of Narcissus Avenue. The subject, a Newark male, 21, was wanted in connections with crimes committed in Fremont, and was arrested as he drove away from the residence.  
Tuesday, Nov. 26
  • Swiped Firebird. At 7:26 a.m. the theft of a 2001 blue Pontiac Firebird, with CA lic. 5VOV885, was logged. The vehicle was taken from a residence in the 37000 block of Magnolia Street between 6 p.m. Nov. 25 and 7:20 a.m. Nov. 26.  
Monday, Nov. 25
  • Stolen car found at Home Depot. A 1997 Toyota Corolla, previously reported stolen out of Fremont, was discovered at 2 a.m. in the Home Depot parking lot.
Sunday, Nov. 24
  • Drunk arrest. A Newark man, 57, arrested Nov. 30 for alleged drunk-and-disorderly conduct, was also picked up on the same charge at 4:10 p.m. at Thornton Avenue and Cedar Boulevard, and booked at Santa Rita Jail, Dublin.
Saturday, Nov. 23
  • Drunk driver flips, wraps car around tree.  A Newark man, 20, was arrested after a 3:30 a.m. suspected DUI collision on Central Avenue near Central Court. The man hit a fire hydrant before his vehicle overturned and wrapped around a tree. The Fire Department spent approximately 30 minutes extricating the motorist from his vehicle before he could be transported to a local trauma center for his injuries. 
  • Smoking hash and carrying loaded gun. During a 10 p.m. security check at the Aloft Hotel parking lot, a Hayward male, 27, was found smoking hashish in his vehicle and in possession of a loaded .40 S&W caliber handgun with the serial number ground off of it, and was arrested. 
  • Drunk driver flees accident scene. A Fremont man, 53, was arrested for a hit-and-run DUI accident at 7:15 p.m. after he reportedly caused a traffic collision at the intersection of Mowry Avenue and Alpine Street and then took off. He was located a few blocks away.  
Friday, Nov. 22
  • Stolen Jetta wrecked, ditched. At 9 a.m., police investigated a roll over collision on Central Avenue near Filbert Street. The vehicle -- a 2000 VW Jetta, CA license 5JWD189, located unoccupied in the drainage canal, was reported stolen the prior evening out of San Jose.
  • A 2006 white Ford Econoline van was reported stolen at 1 p.m. from the 6100 block of Central Avenue sometime overnight.  The vehicle's license is CA # 8C76625.
