Police Log: Stealing; Speeding; Biking the Wrong Way with Meth Pipe

Armed robbery at check-cashing store, and more from Nov. 15 to 21.

The following are significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Nov. 15 to 21 as released by the Newark Police Department.

Thursday, Nov. 21
  • A stolen 2005 Dodge Ram was found at 8:59 a.m. at the Sports Field Park. The vehicle was reported stolen a few days earlier from Newark.
  • Wrong-way cyclist has meth pipe. At 3:42 p.m. along the 35000 block of Orleans Drive, an officer cited a bicyclist for going the wrong way. The 30-year-old Newark man consented to a search of his backpack -- which contained a methamphetamine pipe.
  • All cool on the Xbox front. Officers provided high visibility at both Gamestop stores during the release of the Xbox One gaming console. There were no issues.
  • Carrying crack. A pedestrian stop at 7:27 p.m. near the 7-Eleven on Thornton Avenue and Sycamore Street resulted in the arrest of a Newark man, 57, for alleged possession of crack cocaine.

  • Saw blade thieves at Home Depot. Two Oakland residents, 27 and 23, were arrested for burglary after reporting stealing saw blades at 11 a.m. from Home Depot on Thornton Avenue. The pair left in a gold-colored van, which police spotted and pulled over on Mowry Avenue near I-880.
  •  Driver-passenger switch-seats fail. At 3:17 a.m., police stopped a speeding vehicle that ran a red light at Thornton Avenue and I-880. After the car stopped, the driver climbed into the back seat and the front passenger hopped into the driver's seat. They were both arrested: the driver, a Stanford male, 32, for suspected DUI, and the passenger, a Boston individual, 28, for public intoxication.
  • Accident near Dumbarton Bridge clogged traffic. Story here.
Tuesday, Nov. 19
  • Rob 'n go. A man and woman with a gun held up the Check 'N Go at 35111 Newark Boulevard at 1:58 p.m., then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects were described as: black male, 45 to 50 years old, wearing green clothing; and a black female, also 45 to 50, wearing a jacket with khaki pants and carrying a dark-colored revolver.
  • And as police searched for the Check 'N Go armed robbers, two people were contacted at 2:30 p.m. in the 99 Ranch Market lot on Newark Boulevard -- one of whom, a Newark man, 23, had outstanding warrants and was arrested.
  • Newark Police upgrade license plate scanning system. Story here.
Monday, Nov. 18
  • Shoplifter hides loot in handbag. A suspected shoplifter, 28, was arrested at 5:40 p.m. after being stopped by Macy's loss prevention workers, who found more than 16 stolen items of clothing and jewelry stashed in the suspect's purse.
Sunday, Nov. 17
  • Sibling shoplifters. A brother and sister, 21 and 18 and both from Oakland were busted at 2:19 p.m. for allegedly shoplifting nearly $300 of goods at Sears.
  • Kid pot dealer. At 11:20 a.m. during a security check along Cedar Boulevard, an officer spotted a 13-year-old male shoving a lighter in his pocket. The officer contacted the juvenile and during a consensual search, located marijuana, a scale and text messages on his cell phone about selling marijuana. The teen was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale and released to a parent.
