Police Log: Church Ransacked; Plus, What No-Goodnik Stole a Basketball Hoop?

Woman jailed for refusing to sign her traffic ticket, and more from Nov. 1 to 7.

The following are significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Nov. 1 to 7 as released by the Newark Police Department.

Thursday, Nov. 7

  • Smash-n-grab. An individual's car at Chuck E. Cheese on Mowry Road had its window smashed and electronic items stolen at 9 p.m.
  • Two more car break-ins. At 7:45 p.m. at Isla Restaurant on Mowry School Road, two auto burglaries were reported, however, the victims left before police arrived. (P.S. Police note that reports can still be taken via the phone.)
  • Gang messes with rival's house. Police investigated gang-related vandalism at a home on the 36900 block of Nutmeg Court at 10:45 a.m. The residence is home to an associate of a rival gang.
Wednesday, Nov. 6
  • Grand theft at Home Depot. A Newark man, 53, was arrested for grand theft and embezzlement of more than $2,800 of merchandise from Home Depot on Thornton Avenue.
  • Intruders ransack church. The First Presbyterian Church on Newark Boulevard was burglarized sometime between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 8:45 a.m. Wednesday by suspects who pried open the rear door. The interior was ransacked with several items broken and damaged. The loss is being tabulated.
Tuesday, Nov. 5
  • Motorist refuses ticket, goes to jail. A Newark woman, 26, was arrested and booked at Fremont Jail at 11:24 p.m. after she refused to sign citations for her vehicle's illegally tinted windows, plus driving on a suspended license. Refusing to sign citations leads to arrest and jail, as offenders immediately go before a judge.
  • Car burgling trio chased, two arrested. Police were called at 2:30 p.m. for an auto burglary at the Newark Boulevard CVS/pharmacy. A witness followed the suspects' vehicle onto eastbound Highway 84, and officers spotted the car at 84 and I-880. Two of the three suspects fled into a drainage canal. One suspect, a male, 19, stayed with the car and was arrested. The other two ran under I-880 into Fremont. Fremont police were called to assist, and a 27-year-old man from the Newark-Fremont area was arrested and the other got away.
  • Yo quiero hands out of your pockets. Police responded to reports at 2 p.m. of a man down near Taco Bell on Thornton Avenue. As an officer was determining if the man needed medical aid, the subject continually refused to take his hands out of his jacket pockets and then moved his hand as if he were reaching for a weapon. Other units responded to assist, and the man -- from Fremont, 23, and on probation for resisting arrest -- was arrested for resisting arrest.
Monday, Nov. 4
  • No room at the inn. A female transient, 39, was arrested for being an unwanted guest/trespassing at 2:30 a.m. at Residence Inn.
  • Man high, not lost. Officers were called at 10:20 a.m. to the Thornton Avenue Chevron for a male who appeared to be lost. The 27-year-old Newark man turned out to be under the influence of drugs.  However, he resisted the handcuffs, and was placed on the ground and in a lower-leg restraint for the ride to Santa Rita Jail, Dublin.
Sunday, Nov. 3
  • Unlicensed driver hits pole. A non-injury accident was reported at 1 p.m. at Locust Street and Sunset Avenue, after an 18-year-old motorist lost control of his vehicle and collided with a light pole. He was arrested for no license or identification.
Saturday, Nov. 2
  • Running with meth. A Newark male, 25, was arrested at 11:10 p.m. after he ran from police conducting a pedestrian stop on Tozier Street. The subject was tackled a few blocks away, and booked for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and death threats to a public official.
  • Drunk in traffic. At 11:51 p.m., police responded to Cherry Street where a male was walking in traffic. The transient, 21, was arrested for being drunk in public.
Friday, Nov. 1
  • Difficult DUI dude. A Fremont man, 60, was extremely uncooperative at 2 a.m. when pulled over on Cedar Boulevard for a suspected DUI. After refusing a chemical test, the suspect was served a search warrant for a blood draw and booked at Santa Rita Jail, Dublin.
  • A basketball hoop was reported stolen at 4:54 p.m. from in front of a residence in the 39100 block of Levi Street.
  • Man arrested for DUI in death of worker on I-680. The driver of the vehicle is believed to have been drunk. Story here.
