Police Log: Home Invasion, Armed Robberies, Reports of Batteries

In this week's crime log, police investigate two armed robberies that occurred within 24 hours of one another.

Armed Robberies

An armed robbery occurred at a check cashing business on the corner of Jarvis Avenue and Hayley Street just after 9 a.m. on July 6. Read more about that report by .

A report of a home invasion armed robbery was called into the Newark Police Department just after 11 a.m. on July 5. A resident was believed to be held at gunpoint for at least 20 minutes while three men stole property, police said. Read more about that incident by .

Burglaries and Thefts

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and being in possession of someone else’s identification card at Mowry Avenue and Interstate 880 on July 9.

A report of a burglary occurring at Cedar Boulevard was called into the Newark Police Department at 1:07 p.m. on July 8. Another, on Balentine Drive, was called in  around 9:04 p.m.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of receiving or purchasing stolen property on the 36800 block of Magnolia Street on July 8.

Three minors were arrested on suspicion of theft at NewPark Mall on July 7, and one of them was also arrested on suspicion falsely identifying himself or herself to an officer.

A report of a burglary occurring on Mowry Avenue was called into the Newark Police Department at 10:17 p.m. on July 5.

A minor was arrested and cited on suspicion of theft at JCPennys at NewPark Mall on July 5.

A 24-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of theft and petty theft with a prior at Target at NewPark Mall on July 4. She was booked into Fremont Jail.

Weapon Violations

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of illegally firing a weapon and possession of a concealed weapon without a permit on July 4. He was booked into Fremont Jail.

Assault and Battery

A report of a battery occurring on Spruce Street was called into the Newark Police Department around 1:52 p.m. on July 9.

A report of a battery occurring on Fair Court around 5:15 p.m was called into the Newark Police Department.

A report of a battery occurring at Cherry Street was called into the Newark Police Department at 8:53 p.m. on July 6.

A report of a battery occurring on California Street and Thomas Avenue was called into the Newark Police Department around 1 p.m. on July 5.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and drawing a deadly weapon in a threatening manner on July 5. He was booked into Fremont Jail.

A report of a battery occurring on Thornton Avenue was called into the Newark Police Department at 4:31 p.m. on July 4.

Alcohol and Drugs

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana or an open container of alcohol at Dairy and Cherry avenues on July 7.

A 19-year-old man awas arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (of alcohol or drugs) at Central Avenue and Farwell Drive on July 4.

A 34-year-old man was arrested and cited on suspicion of possession of a hypodermic syringe and drug paraphernalia on July 4.

Other Incidents

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of prowling after a priest reported that he found a man had been in the rectory of a church on Thornton Avenue. No injuries were reported.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of burglary tools and parole violations at Central Avenue on July 9.

Two minors were arrested on suspicion of fighting on school property at the Newark Junior High School on July 7.

Numerous calls about fireworks violations were received by the Newark Police Department on July 4.
