Police Log: Gunshots Fired, Two Car Crashes in One Hour, Fight Outside NewPark Mall

In this week's log, police investigate a potential drive-by shooting, alcohol-related traffic collisions and more.

Newark police received three reports of gunshots being fired last week. Witnesses said police were searching for shell casings after a shooting late Friday, July 22, on Brenton Drive near Cedar Boulevard. Police would not comment on the incident due to an ongoing investigation.

Gunshots were also heard on Magnolia Street about 10:24 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, and at Larkspur Street at about 10:12 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, according to the press log at the Newark Police Department Station.

Pair of Traffic Collisions Within One Hour

Two men were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol after two separate traffic collisions. A 30-year-old Hayward man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into Fremont Jail after his vehicle struck a parked vehicle on Cedar Boulevard at Chapman Drive at 11:37 p.m. on July 23, police said.

About an hour later, a 21-year-old Salinas man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after his vehicle struck a building at Cedar Boulevard and Robertson Avenue, according to the police report. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail. The driver in the second incident received minor injuries.

Fight Outside NewPark Mall

Officers responded to NewPark Mall near automotive center for a reported disturbance with a large group forming. Police found one victim and a potential suspect. No arrests were made and the investigation is ongoing.

Vehicle Thefts

A 36-year-old woman from Vallejo was arrested on July 19 after an officer conducted a fraud investigation at the auto dealership on Balentine Drive, where it was thought she had purchased a car fraudulently. The officer called the woman and requested she return, with the implication that she would receive cash back on the vehicle. Upon her arrival, she was arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle, 10 counts of forgery, obtaining money on false pretences and violation of parole. She was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

A 22-year-old man from Manteca was arrested July 17 after an officer found a car listed as stolen out of Oakland. The officer called a tow truck after trying to locate the driver of the car. Once the tow truck arrived, the man ran out of a motel room at Motel 6 demanding to know why his car was being towed, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle and on a misdemeanor warrant.

Miscellaneous

A number of burglary reports were called into the Newark Police Department throughout the week, along with a robbery on Jarvis Avenue, reported at 8:08 p.m. on Friday, July 22. 

The department also received several reports of assault and battery.
