Police Log: Drive-by Shooting, Man Throws Brick at Car, Child Almost Struck by Car

In this week's crime log, police investigate a drive-by shooting, stolen vehicle calls and reports of burglaries and thefts.

The following is a summary of calls made to and arrests made by the Newark Police Department between July 11 and July 17.

Weapons

Two men, ages 18 and 19, were arrested July 16 on suspicion of shooting a firearm at an occupied residence on the 36000 block of Bettencourt Street at around 8:30 a.m. that day and being in possession of a stolen shotgun. to read more about that incident.

Reports of gunshots fired near Peachtree Avenue were called into the Newark Police Department at 10:05 p.m. on July 16.

Vandalism

Two incidents of vandalism were reported on July 15 on Spencer Court and Jarvis Avenue.

A 35-year-old man was arrested July 11 on suspicion of vandalism after his sibling reported that the he had thrown a brick at a family vehicle on the 7200 block of Nancy Place. Officers found the man on Mayhews Landing at Sycamore Street, but he pulled away from officers and "took a fighting stance," police said. He was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail.

Two minors were arrested on suspicion of vandalism at the Newark Police Department on July 12.

Burglary and Theft

Three burglary reports were called into the Newark Police Department: at 12:05 a.m. on Amaryllis Place, 10:03 a.m. at Newark Plaza and 11:08 p.m. on Ash Street.

A 48-year-old woman was arrested and cited on suspicion of shoplifting from Macy's, 200 NewPark Mall, on July 17.

Two reports of burglaries were called into the Newark Police Department on July 15, one at 10:05 a.m. on Magnolia Avenue and another at 7 p.m. at Saint Mark Avenue.

A minor was arrested and cited on suspicion of theft at Macy's, 20 NewPark Mall, on July 14.

A report of a burglary on Cedar Boulevard was called into the Newark Police Department at 9:58 a.m. on July 13. Another, from Newark Boulevard, was called in at 7:29 p.m.

A report of a burglary on Edith Street was called into the Newark Police Department at 1:08 p.m. on July 12. Three reports of stolen vehicles were called into the Newark Police Department on July 12.

A minor was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at an undisclosed location on July 12.

A report of a residential burglary on the 6300 block of Honeysuckle Drive was called into the Newark Police Department around 5:40 p.m.  on July 11. Newark police said the burglars were seen leaving the home and were described as three Hispanic males driving a gray, American-made pickup truck.

Three reports of burglaries were called into the Newark Police Department on July 11. One was called in at 12:31 p.m. from Farnham Drive, another at 1:23 p.m. from Montcalm Avenue and the last at 10:49 p.m. from Moores Avenue.

Batteries and Assaults

A report of an assault occurring on Jarvis Avenue at 4:06 a.m. on July 13 was called into the Newark Police Department.

A report of a battery occurring on Jarvis Avenue at 12:39 a.m. was reported to the Newark Police Department on July 12.

Drugs and Alcohol

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at Newark Boulevard and Lafayette Avenue on July 15. He was booked into Fremont Jail.

A 35-year-old man was arrested and cited on suspicion of driving whith possession of marijuana or with an open container of alcohol at EZ8 Motel.

Traffic Incidents

A 6-year-old suffered minor scrapes to his back after he was nearly struck by a vehicle on Newark Boulevard the morning of July 16. The motorist slammed on the brakes when he saw the child break away from a group of children attempting to cross the street and stopped right before striking the child, causing the child to fall over, police said. The child was transported to a nearby hospital for precautionary reasons.

A juvenile was cited for a hit-and-run incident on Cherry Street at 6:41 a.m. on July 13.
