Police Identify Woman Killed in Stabbing

Evangeline Supena Contillo, 25, was the victim in Cherry Street homicide, police say.

A  of apparent stab wounds has been identified as 25-year-old Evangeline Supena Contillo, said Commander Donna Shearn of the Newark Police Department.

Newark police officers found Contillo's body inside a home on the 36000 block of Cherry Street Wednesday morning after arriving at the residence to check on a report of a beating, according to Newark Police Commander Bob Douglas.

The cause of death is under investigation, but police arrested a Newark man at the scene of the crime and said it appeared that Contillo had been stabbed.

Jason Otis Monroe, 33, of Newark is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in connection with the killing. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fremont Hall of Justice.

Police said they found Monroe in front of the home with his clothes and hands covered in blood. He was living in the residence on Cherry Street, according to police and neighbors.

Attempts to contact the family living in the Cherry Street house were unsuccessful Thursday morning, but the porch was decorated with a small memorial that included a crucifix, flowers and candles.

Neighbors told Newark Patch Wednesday that Contillo and Monroe were in a relationship and had two children together.

This marks the first homicide of Newark in 2011.
