Police officers surrounded a Newark home on Cedar Boulevard Thursday as part of an investigation of a carjacking and beating, authorities said.

Det. Bill Veteran of the Fremont Police Department said Thursday evening that several people believed to be residents of the home, both men and women, were taken into custody to be questioned.

Veteran added that officers believe at least one of the people detained is a suspect of the carjacking.

The carjacking occurred at 3 a.m. Thursday on Thornton Avenue near San Pedro Avenue in Fremont and that the victim was pulled from the car and beaten, according to Sgt. Jeff Campbell of the Fremont Police Department.

It is unknown whether the victim was treated at a hospital, but the victim, who is said to be an adult male, was the one who submitted the report, authorities said.

Campbell said police began surrounding the one-story home around 11:38 a.m.

SWAT teams entered the home around 4:30 p.m. and came out of the home around 5:30 p.m. It doesn't appear that anyone else is in custody.

Newark police told residents on Greenwich Court, which is across from the targeted home, that while they did not believe anyone was in immediate danger, they are encouraged to evacuate the area.

A neighbor of the targeted home said its occupants have been living there for about a year but that he didn't know them well. He said he had seen a lot of activity there.

"There was a lot of going in and out of the house all the time, all day long," said the neighbor, who did not want his name published.

Other neighbors have said the home seemed to be occupied by several people.  Aerial shots from CBS 5 San Francisco show that there are two smaller structures in the back yard of the home.

Police cleared the area by 6:55 p.m.
