A Richmond man was arrested Sunday in San Leandro after police said he was involved in a vehicle theft.
Police said they have not identified the 31-year-old suspect, because investigators are trying to determine if he is involved in other thefts in the area. Around 5:15 p.m., an officer driving a marked police car equipped with a license plate reader passed a Honda Accord on Alvarado Street.
Police said the car had been reported stolen to the Newark Police Department on June 12. Police said the suspect driving the stolen vehicle initially pulled over when stopped by the officer, but when the officer started to get out of his car, the suspect sped off onto an adjacent street. Police said the suspect then drove over a sidewalk and through gravel, adjacent to railroad tracks near Williams Street.
The suspect crashed into railroad crossing arms and then ran from the vehicle, police said. After establishing a perimeter and calling in K9 units, officers located the suspect hiding in a nearby commercial yard. Police said he was taken into custody without further incident.
Police said the suspect was recently paroled from prison and has a history of arrests involving stolen vehicles.
