A Newark woman was shot in the throat early Sunday while driving through Richmond on Interstate Highway 80, according to police.
Richmond Police Sgt. Roger Buhlis said the 57-year-old woman was driving west on I-80 near Hilltop Drive around 1:25 a.m. when she heard a popping sound and then realized her throat was bleeding.
Police said the woman was able to drive herself to a hospital where she was admitted in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to her throat. The woman did not see anyone in the area where the shot originated, and police say there is no indication at this time that the woman was specifically targeted.
Buhlis said that Richmond’s gunfire Shot Spotter system picked up the sound of the shot. Police do not have a suspect, and the case is under investigation, Buhlis said. Police have not released the woman's name.
