Newark Police Share Halloween Safety Tips

It's the Great Pumpkin season, and everyone should enjoy it safely! Read on!

The Newark Police Department shared the following safety tips for parents that will keep kids safe on Halloween.

Halloween Safety Tips for Kids:

• Costumes should fit correctly so kids won't trip on them. Wear light-colored costumes to be seen at night.

• Kids should not try to Trick or Treat by themselves. They should go with an adult and a group of friends.

• Map out where the group will be going. Visit only the well-lit houses.

• Try to Trick-or-Treat while it is still light out; always bring a flashlight, it may get dark. Wear a reflective costume or stickers.

• Pick well-lit streets. Walk on the sidewalks. Do not take shortcuts or alleys.

• Only accept candy at a person's front door. Do not go inside of a house or into someone's car.

• Have a back-up plan in case you get separated from your group. Carry a cell phone, walkie-talkie, and the number of a trusted adult.

• Don't eat any candy until you get home. Have an adult check to make sure there are no tricks in your treats! If you receive suspicious candy, contact your local police.

Halloween Safety Tips for Parents:

• Help your child plan a costume that is flame retardant, easy to walk in, does not limit or block eyesight and is bright and has reflective stickers or tape. Consider face painting instead of a mask.

• Find out if there is a community, church or school Halloween event taking place that could be an alternative to trick-or-treating.

• Before Halloween night, map out where you will be trick-or-treating. Children can only go to the houses that are on the map and are well-lighted.

• Your child should trick-or-treat with a group. Children must be accompanied by an adult when trick or treating.

• Plan to go trick-or-treating while it is still light out. If not, adults should carry a flashlight to help illuminate the walking path.

• Have dinner before trick-or-treating to discourage munching on the streets.
