Newark Police Crack Down on Drunk Drivers

DUI enforcement will be high during holiday weekend.

Newark police will be taking part in a countywide effort Saturday to curb drunken driving, according to Newark Police Sgt. Jonathan Arguello.

The police department will be participating in the Avoid the 21 Campaign, an effort that aims to decrease the number of impaired drivers on the roadways during the Memorial Day weekend.

Police will hold a DUI and driver license status checkpoint as part of this effort. It will be held from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Mowry Avenue near Alpenrose Court on May 28.

Newark police will also be looking for drunk drivers on the road and encourages people to report suspected drunk drivers by calling 9-1-1.

Possible indicators include drivers who are swerving, weaving in and out of lanes, traveling much slower, driving aggressively or driving without headlights.

The Office of Traffic Safety and the Alameda County Chiefs of Police Association sponsor the Avoid the 21 Campaign is sponsored by the. Twenty-one Alameda County law enforcement agencies are participating in the campaign.
