Multiple Agencies Target Speeding Drivers, Traffic Violations in Newark

The High Intensity Traffic Team found 75 different violations and issued 69 citations in Newark on Feb. 23, according to Newark police.

The Newark Police Department has released new numbers from an enforcement campaign that had several law enforcement agencies cracking down on speeding violations and raising driver safety awareness.

According to Commander Donna Shearn, Newark traffic officers joined their counterparts from the California Highway Patrol, Hayward Police and San Leandro Police on Feb. 23 as part of the High Intensity Traffic Team (HITT).

Shearn says HITT officers focused on speeding vehicles and other violations in Newark. During the enforcement period, HITT officers found 75 different violations on 69 citations issued.

HITT members help each other every month to target problem areas based on collision statistics, citizen complaints and traffic volume, says Shearn. The team focuses on areas that have a high volume of vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

“The additional 12 to 14 traffic officers from the participating agencies have a tremendous impact on the hosting city in an effort to remind the motoring public of the importance of traffic safety,” Shearn said in a news release.
