Man Injured in Police Shootout Arrested in Hospital
Kevin Rhoades, 50, of San Jose, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against three police officers and reckless discharge of a firearm in the May 17 shootout.

A San Jose man who nearly died after exchanging gunfire with police during a standoff in Newark earlier this month was arrested as he remains recovering in a hospital, police said Wednesday.
Police served an arrest warrant for assault with a deadly weapon against three police officers and reckless discharge of a firearm and said Kevin Rhoades, 50, would be booked into jail for the May 17 shooting once he is released from the hospital.
Newark police responded to the 5500 block of Sandalwood Drive at 5:40 p.m. that day after receiving a call reporting a relative there was depressed and in possession of several guns.
The caller said the man had been making suicidal threats, police said.
Police surrounded the home and negotiators talked to the man over the phone and heard as many as 30 shots fired inside. Over the next 45 minutes, the man refused to surrender and threatened to shoot police before hanging up the phone.
An armored vehicle arrived at the standoff, and the man came out and fired shots at the vehicle. Police returned gunfire and he went back into the house.
Eventually Rhoades was found shot inside and was taken to a hospital.
