Man Injured in Drug Deal Gone Awry

Police are still searching for the suspect in an attempted armed robbery that occurred around 12:51 p.m. Wednesday.

Police are searching for a man after an attempt to sell drugs turned into an attempted armed robbery that left one injured Wednesday afternoon. 

Police said a 30-year-old Newark man was walking near the 35600 block of Haley Street toward around 12:51 p.m. when the suspect called to him from a carport of an apartment complex offering to sell him drugs. The suspect then proceeded to try and rob the 30-year-old man at gunpoint, police said.

The men struggled with the weapon and the force of it discharging fractured the 30-year-old man's hand, according to a police report.

Both men fled the scene, and the victim went to a local hospital without contacting police, police said. Staff at the hospital reported the incident to the Newark Police Department. No witnesses were found and no property was taken.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-10 Hispanic man of muscular build with medium to dark complexion and a goatee. He was last seen wearing a red/burgundy baseball hat with an MLB logo, a long-sleeved black shirt and blue jeans.
