An elderly man who died after being injured in a one-alarm fire at his Newark home on Wednesday night has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 93-year-old Perkin Britton.

The fire was reported in the 36500 block of Darvon Street at about 9:40 p.m., Alameda County battalion chief Terence Carey said. When crews arrived, the one-story home was filled with smoke, according to Carey.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze within about 10 minutes. Britton was found inside the home and was transported to a hospital, where he later died, Carey said.
