Man Beaten, Stabbed by a Dozen Assailants in Mistaken Identity Case

A man was beaten and stabbed by a dozen assailants early Sunday morning in what police say may be a case of mistaken identity, according to media reports. 

According to the Fremont Argus, Newark officers learned of the incident when responding to a patient at Washington Hospital.

The victim told officers that he was attacked at around 5 a.m. while walking on Thornton Avenue near Newark Plaza. He said two male suspects approached him and asked if he was Tongan and if his name was “Curley.”

That’s when two carloads of about 10 to 12 male suspects pulled up, exited the cars and attacked the victim.

The victim was stabbed during the altercation. However, the victim was unaware that he was stabbed because he had been drinking and walked home. He was later taken to the hospital, according to the Argus.

The man remained in serious condition Tuesday but his injuries are not life-threatening, the Argus reports.

Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not available and the motive for the attack is unknown.
