Updated Sept. 17, 11: 13 a.m.

A wanted parolee was arrested Sunday following an hours-long standoff with police at the Motel 6 in Newark.

According to the Newark Police Department, the incident began at about 8:15 a.m. after officers went to assist CHP in serving a felony warrant at the motel, located at 5601 Mowry Ave.

The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Hayward man Eric Ontiveros, was wanted for a violent crime and believed to be armed and dangerous, police said.

Police also believed Ontiveros might have had his girlfriend with him, who he was restrained from by a court order.

Authorities surrounded the motel but police said “Ontiveros stated that he would not come out and made that very clear.”

Because he refused to surrender, Newark police asked for assistance from Union City and Fremont SWAT teams.

Ontiveros eventually surrendered to SWAT officers, police said. Newark police sent out an alert shortly after 2:30 p.m. Sunday notifying the public that the standoff had ended.

When Ontiveros was later being interviewed, police said they saw him trying to conceal something in his rectum.

Officers conducted a strip search and found seven Vicodin pills in his rectum.

Ontiveros was taken to Santa Rita Jail and booked on suspicion of multiple charges, including resisting arrest, possession of Vicodin and violating a restraining order.

He is being held on $35,000 bail, according to online court records.
