Insanity Hearing for Murder Suspect Delayed

Jason Otis Monroe, who faces a murder charge in connection to the April 2011 stabbing death of his girlfriend, is scheduled to return to court in December.

The insanity hearing for a Newark man ordered to stand trial for the murder of his girlfriend has been delayed.

Jason Otis Monroe, 34, was originally scheduled for a not guilty by reason of insanity hearing at the Hayward Hall of Justice Monday morning.

The hearing was pushed back as the court is still waiting to receive a report from a psychologist, according Alameda County deputy district attorney Charles Wilson.

Monroe is scheduled to return to the Hayward Hall of Justice at 9 a.m. on Dec. 21.

Monroe is charged with murder for the 2011 stabbing death of Evangeline Supena Contillo, his girlfriend and mother of his two children.

Contillo was found dead of apparent stab wounds inside of a Cherry Street home around 11:30 a.m. on April 27, 2011. She was 25.

Police said she sustained 37 injuries at the time of her death.

During preliminary examinations in May, the suspect’s mother, Belinda Monroe, testified that her son had paranoia that impacted his ability to trust people.

“Sometimes, I’d be the one he wouldn’t trust,” Belinda Monroe said.

Both Belinda Monroe and Contillo had restraining orders against Monroe at the time Contillo was murdered. The restraining order stemmed from a domestic batter that occurred Feb. 25, 2011 in which Monroe attacked both his mother and girlfriend.

Monroe is still in custody at Santa Rita Jail and is being held on no bail.

One story I tried to read had an ad covering 1/4 of it, and there was no way to make it go away.
