UPDATE: Riverside County Man Killed in Fremont Motorcycle Accident

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. on Interstate 680, backing up traffic for at least two hours.

Bay City News β€” The motorcyclist who was killed in a crash on Interstate Highway 680 in Fremont Wednesday morning was identified as a Riverside County man by the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

Wildomar resident David Dech, 39, tried to enter northbound I-680 from Mission Boulevard on his Kawasaki bike around 5:40 a.m., California Highway Patrol Office Steve Creel said.

As Dech rode up the on-ramp, witnesses said they saw smoke coming from the motorcycle before he veered left over a raised median that separates the on-ramp from the highway, Creel said.

Dech was launched from the bike and landed on the right shoulder of the highway. The motorcycle came to rest in right lane.

Witnesses told the CHP that the bike appeared to be traveling at 70 to 75 mph as Dech prepared to merge into highway traffic, which was not heavy in the northbound direction at that hour, he said.

Dech was pronounced dead at the scene and the right lane of I-680 was closed as the crash was cleared. The cause of the accident is under investigation, he said.
