Evergreen Says Oil Leak Posed No Threat to Public

A statement is released by oil refinery officials after an oil leak prompted an evacuation of about 70 people.

Evergreen Oil Refinery issued a statement regarding Friday morning's oil leak that prompted the evacuation of its oil refinery plant on Smith Avenue in Newark.

The statement is as follows:

Today, July 6, 2012 at approximately 8:35 a.m. our Evergreen operations team experienced a heat transfer fluid release, commonly used in industry.

Working quickly and relying on their emergency training, the Evergreen operations team evaluated the situation and immediately called Alameda County Fire as a precaution. There was no fire and no injuries. One worker was evaluated for exposure and released by the medical facility and returned to work. The release posed no threat to the public safety and health of our neighboring businesses and residents.

Emergency crews arrived and worked with the Evergreen operations team to keep the situation under control.

The plant is now in safe and stable condition as we investigate the release and continue to work closely with the City of Newark and Alameda County Fire Department

The oil leak was secured by 10:30 a.m., according to fire officials. Read more about Friday morning's reported .

One story I tried to read had an ad covering 1/4 of it, and there was no way to make it go away.

Don't like it at all. "Change" isn't always for the better.
