Update: Missing Elderly Man Found Safe

The man was missing overnight.

Update:
An elderly man who went missing in Newark on Monday evening after going on his daily walk has been found safe, police said.

Jose Avila, 77, left on the walk around 6:45 p.m. and did not return home, according to police.

Avila had last been seen near Birch Street and Central Avenue.

At about 6:35 a.m. today, Avila was located, police said.

Newark police are looking for an elderly man missing since Monday evening.

Jose Avila, 77, left for his daily walk around 6:45 p.m. and did not return home, police said. He was last seen near Birch Street and Central Avenue, police said.

He usually walks in the area of Birch Grove and Byington parks, located less than a mile away from each other, according to police.

Avila is described as a Hispanic man standing about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing around 170 pounds and has gray hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a beige sweater, beige pants and black shoes.

Anyone who spots Avila is asked to call 911 or Newark police at (510) 790-7237.
