Crime Log: Two Arrested in Motel Standoff; Drunk Driver Injured in Accident

A summary of incidents reported in Newark from Feb. 6 to 11.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Feb. 5 and Feb. 11 as released by the Newark Police Department.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 6

Residential burglaries

A home burglary was reported on the 35200 block of Wycombe Place at 3:37 p.m. The suspect(s) forced through the front door.

A home on the 36300 block of Barnard Street was ransacked in a burglary between 9:30 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. Again, entry was made by forcing the front door open.

Unknown suspects ransacked a home on the 37000 block of Chestnut Street during the day. It was reported at 8:50 p.m. The suspects entered the home by breaking a rear window.

THURSDAY, FEB. 7

Man arrested after trying to break into EZ-8 room

A 36-year-old Newark man was arrested after trying to force his way into a room at the EZ-8 Motel to confront his girlfriend around 12:45 a.m. When officers arrived, the man fled on foot. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and being drink in public.

Newark police help track stolen plumber’s van from Fremont

A Newark police officer located a plumber’s work van reported stolen out of Fremont. The officer spotted the van around 5 p.m. and followed it on I-8- to Hayward where other officers and CHP also began tailing the suspect. After a high-risk stop in Hayward, the 39-year-old suspect, a transient from Hayward, was taken into custody. Fremont police took over the investigation.

SUNDAY, FEB. 10

Car thieves arrested

An officer stopped a car on Mowry Avenue that was reported stolen out of San Leandro. The officer stopped the car around noon and detained two male suspects, one of whom had an outstanding warrant. Through the investigation, the officer learned that the driver, a 50-year-old Hayward man, was aware that his girlfriend had rented the vehicle but had not returned it. He was arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.

Drunk driver injured in accident with parked car

A 68-year-old man was arrested after crashing into a parked car near the intersection of Newark Boulevard and Ruschin Road around 4:55 p.m. The driver was discovered to have been drink and was transported to the hospital due to sustaining injuries in the accident.

Man escapes, passenger arrested in traffic stop

An officer stopped a vehicle in the intersection of Thornton Avenue and Olive Street at about 10 p.m. The driver fled on foot, leaving a drunk passenger behind. Authorities searched the area but could not locate the driver but ended up arrested the passenger and towing the vehicle.

MONDAY, FEB. 11

Two arrested at EZ 8 Motel following Fremont bank robbery

Two men suspected of robbing a Fremont bank Monday afternoon were arrested after an hours-long standoff at Newark's EZ 8 Motel on Cedar Boulevard near Interstate 880.

Jeremiah Martin, a 37-year-old San Francisco resident was arrested for robbery, receiving known stolen property and possession of a controlled substance. Michael Luckert, a 43-year-old San Francisco resident was arrested for robbery, receiving known stolen property and violation of probation.
