Crime Log: Tired Partygoer Steals Wheels; Man With Gun Walks Into A Bar (Not A Joke)

Student swipes teacher's phone, trial updates, and more from May 26 to June 1.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between May 26 and June 1 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

Saturday, June 1

  • Drunk ... and sick A 53-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication after he was found at 4 p.m. stumbling through the old Mervyn's parking lot on Mowry Avenue. During the ride to Santa Rita Jail, Dublin, the suspect vomited inside the patrol vehicle, necessitating a call to Crime Scene Cleaners.
  • Oops, he did it again. As officers attempted to detain a bicyclist for a resisting-arrest warrant, the man ditched his bike and fled on foot through a Haley Street apartment complex. He is still at-large. 
Friday, May 31
  • Newark man arrested in two Fremont shootings. Rigoberto Cornejo, 20, of Newark, is suspected of shooting a man in the leg at Los Cerritos Park in Fremont last week. He is also a suspect in another Fremont shooting that occurred in April. Details here
  • Teen gets 16 years for Osana Futi stabbing. Story here.
  • Fremont gang member convicted of 2010 killing of Newark teen. Daniel Howard, 31, was convicted of killing 17-year-old Justice Afoa. Two other suspects also are charged with murder in connection with Afoa's death but they are scheduled to be prosecuted in a separate trial at a later date. Details here.
Thursday, May 30
  • Man brings gun to Whiskeytown. A Fremont man, 27, got a lot of attention when he arrived at the Whiskeytown Saloon at 5:30 p.m. and placed a handgun on the bar. The bartender grabbed the gun, and police were called, and everyone was ushered outside. The suspect, however, was still seated at the bar and ignored police commands. He was eventually apprehended, and the handgun was determined to be a replica airsoft pistol.

 Wednesday, May 29
  • Kid suspect steals teacher's phone. Tracking software in a teacher's cell phone, that was reported stolen at 2:51 p.m. at Newark Memorial High School, led officers to a Cherry Street home. The juvenile at the address spotted the police and tossed the stolen cell over his back fence, destroying it in the process. He was arrested for theft and and destruction of evidence, and released to a relative.

Tuesday, May 28
  • Yard art belonging to autistic girl stolen. A pig on a rainbow-colored bicycle yard art belonging to a 7-year-old girl with autism -- was stolen from the front yard of a home on the 6200 block of Dairy Avenue. See picture here. 
  • Charges not filed against vocal city government critic. Story here.
  • Trio sought in Fremont home invasion robbery. Police are searching for three male suspects who authorities said broke in and  robbed residents of a Mountain Drive home late Tuesday night. Full story here.

Monday, May 27
  • Man fails at motorcycle swipe. A 56-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of attempted vehicle theft after he was spotted trying to start a motorcycle parked in a driveway on Abington Court. Suspicious neighbors knew the motorcycle's owner and this was not the owner. The suspect was seen jamming a metal object into the motorcycle's ignition in an attempt to get it started. The owner was contacted and told police that no one had permission to use -- or start -- his motorcycle, and the suspect was arrested without incident. 
Sunday, May 26
  • Tired, drunken partygoer steals wheels to get home. An intoxicated 20-year-old man, who told police he was too tired to walk home from a party, decided to steal a vehicle from somewhere in Union City, then crashed it in a single-car rollover accident at 6 a.m. on Edgewater Drive at Cedar Boulevard. The suspect submitted to a Preliminary Alcohol Screening test and blew a .23 and a .24 BAC. He was arrested for DUI and vehicle theft.
