  • Off-duty cop tracks suspected burglars. An off-duty San Jose Police Department officer called in a residential burglary he witnessed at noontime on Manzanita Avenue where intruders removed a front screen to break into a home. The suspects were seen leaving with a small safe and money -- items found later in their vehicle. The off-duty cop kept watch, providing continuous updates to Newark's dispatch center, and officers busted the duo as they were driving out of Newark. Arrested were two Palo Alto men, both 18.

  • Overseas assault. A female called police at 10:30 a.m. to report that she was sexually assaulted while vacationing in China. After returning home, she felt she needed to report the incident to law enforcement. The victim had contacted Interpol, as well as the California Highway Patrol, and was referred to Newark police, who took the report and will speak to Interpol upon completion of the investigation.
Sunday, May 12
  • Threes-a-crowd "date" goes awry. Police were called at 3:52 p.m. to a robbery report at the Hilton Hotel in Newark. The victim had telephoned  a woman, who advertised escort services on Red Book, an online service. The two agreed to meet at the Hilton, but another male also accompanied the female. The three piled into that man's vehicle and headed to an ATM so the victim could get cash for the services. Once at the ATM, the male pulled out a black handgun and ordered the victim to remove as much money as he could from his bank account. The panicked victim forgot his ATM pin number, and the suspect reportedly assaulted the victim and kicked him out of the vehicle. The suspect was described as a 20- to 25 year-old, 6-foot black male with a thin build ... and armed with a black handgun.
