Crime Log: Sears Employee Steals Money From Register; Home and Car Burglaries Reported

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Nov. 5 and Nov. 11 as released by the Newark Police Department.

MONDAY, NOV. 5

Newark Man Caught with Stolen Watches

A 48-year-old Newark man was arrested after police conducted a probation search during a traffic stop just after 9:30 a.m. and found stolen watches – one of which was from a Fremont home burglary – in his vehicle. Authorities said the man was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, which is what the man was on probation for. Police found more stolen property during a search of the man’s home, and he was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

Home Burglarized for the Second Time in One Month

A home on Christine Street was found burglarized around 9:15 p.m. While the loss is unknown, police said burglars targeted the home earlier this month and that this burglary was the second one in that time period.

Burglaries and Thefts

• Police investigated a reported theft of copper wire and tools from a construction site on the 7900 block of Gateway Boulevard around 6:16 a.m.
• A yellow Burleigh brand bicycle trailer was stolen out of a garage on the 37000 block of Sycamore Street and was reported around 7 a.m.
• A car burglary was reported just before 8 a.m. in which the burglar(s) smashed a window and took a GPS device and tools from the car, which was parked outside of a home on Truckee Court.
• A license plate was stolen from a car parked on Breton Drive around 11 a.m. The license plate number is 4TNN582.
• A laptop and purse were stolen out of a hotel room just before 1 p.m. at the Hilton on the 39000 block of Balentine Drive. Authorities said the victim knows the suspect and the investigation is ongoing.
• Two minors were arrested on suspicion of petty theft and released to their parents after shoplifting from Macy’s at NewPark Mall around 5:40 p.m.
• Jewelry, high-end camera equipment and a computer were stolen out of a vehicle on Civic Terrace Avenue over the weekend.

TUESDAY, NOV. 6

Suspects Sought in Home Burglary

Police are looking for suspects who took jewelry from a home on the 8100 block of Juniper Avenue just before 10 a.m. The suspects were described as two black men between the ages of 18- and 20-years-old and between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10 of thin build. One was last seen wearing a green jacket, while the other was last seen wearing a beige jacket.

Bicyclist Injured in Traffic Accident

A bicyclist was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle near Cedar and Lake boulevards around 10:20 a.m. Police said the man suffered minor injuries.

Man Places Former Co-Worker’s Social Security in Library Book

A 59-year-old Fremont man was arrested after he reportedly was found placing pieces of paper with his former co-worker’s full name and social security number into a book that is accessible to the community in the Newark Library. The man was arrested on suspicion of identity theft and booked into Fremont Jail.

Sears Employee Caught Stealing Money From Register

A 22-year-old Fremont woman was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement and theft after Sears Loss Prevention officers observed her “skimming money from her register,” police said. She was arrested, cited and released.

One Arrested After Family Disturbance Over Finances Escalates

A man was arrested after police were called to the 7000 block of Cabernet Avenue just before 10 p.m. to a report of a disturbance between family members. Police said family members reported that the man, who is on parole, was threatening others with a gun. Authorities said the family has been fighting over finances. Police conducted a parole search and found two shotguns and ammo hidden in a closet. The man was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammo and violating parole. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

• A black 2007 Toyota Camry reported stolen out of East Palo Alto was found around 7:20 a.m. in Lincoln Elementary School’s parking lot.
• Mail from a home on the 6900 block of Jarvis Avenue was reported stolen around 9:45 a.m.
• A car burglary was reported in the parking lot of BJ’s Restaurant around 12:30 p.m.
• Watches were stolen from a home burglary on the 36200 block of Haley Street that was reported around 3:30 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7

Fire on Merione Drive Displaces Family

A family of five has been displaced after a fire sparked inside of their home just after 2 a.m., fire officials said. Deputy Chief Dave Lord said firefighters responded to the 8100 block of Merione Drive to find the two-story home fully engulfed in flames. Damage caused by the fire is estimated at more than $100,000 and the entire house was destroyed, Lord said. No injuries were reported. Click here for the full report.

THURSDAY, NOV. 8

Police Seek Burglars Who Entered Spruce Street Home

A woman called police after she spotted two suspected burglars inside of her home around 7:45 p.m. Police said the woman was in the backyard with her son when she heard someone inside of her home on the 36000 block of Spruce Street. Initially, the woman didn’t go in the home because she thought it was her sister’s boyfriend, but 15 minutes later she looked and saw two men se didn’t know. The woman grabbed her son and fled to a neighbor’s home. The suspects fled before police arrived.

FRIDAY, NOV. 9

Burglaries and Thefts

• A home on the 36000 block of Fir Court was found burglarized around 4:30 p.m.
• Police investigated a report of a home burglary on the 36900 block of Darvon Street around 7:30 p.m.
• A home on the 36000 block of Sycamore Street was found burglarized and reported around 10:40 p.m.
• Two vehicle burglaries were reported from the parking lot of BJ’s Restaurant around 11:40 p.m.

SATURDAY, NOV. 10

Two-Alarm Fire on Severn Drive Displaces Family

A family was displaced after a two-alarm fire sparked just before 2:30 p.m. The blaze caused $175,000-$200,000 in damage and destroyed the single-family home’s garage and roof. No one was injured. Read the full report here.

SUNDAY, NOV. 11

Burglaries and Thefts

• A home burglary on Elmwood Street was reported around 8:30 p.m. Police said the burglar(s) entered through a “doggy door” and took jewelry, a pair of MacBook Pro computers and a Sony game console.
• A Plummer Avenue home was found ransacked shortly before 11 p.m.
