Crime Log: Prowler Spotted in Backyard; Drunk Driver Arrested in Hit-and-Run

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Jan. 24 and Jan. 29 as released by the Newark Police Department.

THURSDAY, JAN. 24

Residential burglary

A home on the 36200 block of Chelsea Drive was broken into between 12:30 and 2:55 p.m. The suspects kicked the front door open and stole jewelry after ransacking the home.

Man spotted lurking in backyard

A man was spotted prowling in the backyard of a home on the 36500 block of Spruce Street. The homeowner called police after spotting the man at 11:54 a.m. Officers responded and conducted an extensive search for the suspect to no avail. He was described as a Hispanic male about 20 to 30 years old, 5-foot-10 with a medium build and wearing a black shirt with blue jeans. 

Residential burglary

Two iPads, a small safe with cash and a Nintendo DS were stolen from a home on the 6200 block of Joaquin Murieta Avenue between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. It appeared that the suspects may have entered the home through a rear sliding door.

SATURDAY, JAN. 26

Two arrested after grab-and-run at NewPark Mall

Two transients were arrested on suspicion of theft and outstanding warrants after stealing items from the Sears store and running around 4:53 p.m. The suspects, an 18-year-old man and a 25-year-old man, were eventually located in the area of Cedar Boulevard and Birch Street. Both were arrested on burglary charges, however, the 25-year-old had an outstanding domestic violence warrant and was arrested for that, as well.

Residential burglary interrupted by homeowners

Residents of a home on Jacaranda Drive were in for a surprise when they came home Saturday night. As they came home at about 8:25 p.m., they spotted a 20-year-old man running out of their garage with camera equipment and an iPad. Officers responded and found evidence at the scene but could not locate the suspect.

Man arrested at Safeway

Officers were called to Safeway to check on a man acting bizarre inside the store at about 10:52 p.m. It was discovered that the man had a felony warrant for a parole violation and was in possession of a meth pipe. He was arrested on multiple charges and taken to Santa Rita Jail. 

SUNDAY, JAN. 27

Drunk driver tries to commit hit-and-run, gets busted with meth and coke

A drunken driver crashed his car on Spruce Street at around 4:15 a.m. An officer responded to the area and found the man running away from the scene. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, committing a hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest and possessing meth and cocaine.

Stolen car

A car was reported stolen from Braidburn Ave. The car, a black 1968 Mercury Cougar with a license plate number 4WFD691, was stolen between 2 and 8 a.m.

TUESDAY, JAN. 29

Two arrested in hit-and-run

Officers responded to the 35100 block of Newark Boulevard on a report of a hit-and-run at around 11:25 p.m. The 24-year-old driver fled the area but was located at a nearby McDonald’s where the driver and another suspect were arrested on charges of committing a hit-and-run and being drunk in public.

Intoxicated man takes cab home, returns for car shortly after

A 46-year-old Newark man almost dodged a bullet. The man was trying to leave Gubera’s bar drunk at around 12:05 a.m. Concerned citizens alerted police to keep him off of the road. An officer responded and advised him to take a cab home, which the man agreed to. But 30 minutes later, the man returned to the bar to retrieve his car. The officer returned and located the man as he was leaving the area and arrested him on suspicion of driving while under the influence.
