Crime Log: One Brazen Burglar Parks in Home's Driveway; Another Wakes, Punches Marsten Resident

A must-see I-880 road-rage video, and more from April 28 to May 4.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between April 28 to May 4 as released by the Newark Police Department.

SATURDAY, MAY 4

  • Deadly limo fire. The dead and injured passengers in a limousine fire on the San Mateo Bridge were all women in their 30s and 40s traveling from Alameda to Foster City, authorities said. Read full story here.

  • Burglar confronts sleeping woman. A Marsten Drive woman asleep at 10:15 a.m. in an upstairs bedroom was jarred awake by a burglar, who forced her into a bathroom, and then punched her in the face. Read full story here.

THURSDAY, MAY 2

  • 'Extreme road rage' on I-880 caught on video, that has now gone viral with more than 1.7 million views. See it here. 
  • Arrests of hot-mess motorist and passenger. After numerous citizen calls citizens to police concerning a possible drunken driver, officers located the suspect, a Newark male, 40, at 7:50 p.m., and arrested him for suspicion of driving under the influence, being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of controlled substance for sale, domestic violence and child endangerment. And his passenger, a Newark woman, 32, was arrested, as well, for alleged influence of a controlled substance, paraphernalia possession and possession of controlled substances for sale. 

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1

  • Safeway worker struck by fleeing thief. After watching two people steal items, the Fremont Warm Springs Safeway security crew attempted to stop one, a male, who hit the loss-prevention officer in the face and then ran to his car, a white Chevy Lumina, and fled from the lot. The suspect was described as a 35-year-old black man with a dark complexion and dreadlocks. His female accomplice, meanwhile, was contacted inside the store, as she dumped merchandise from her concealed bag, arrested and booked at Dublin.

  • Union City teacher arrested on molestation charges. Michael William Howry, 47, a third-grade teacher at Alvarado Elementary School, was arrested at his home on suspected student molestation. Read full story here. 

TUESDAY, APRIL 30

  • Burglar parks in target's driveway? A residential burglary reported at 6:52 p.m. on the 5900 block of Mayhews Landing Road was likely the work of a man whom a neighbor saw pulling into the victim's driveway at 10:30 a.m. Described as a thin Asian male, 5'10" and 25 to 30 years old, he was driving a newer, light blue Toyota. And he was later seen exiting the home's front door with a computer bag. His entry was through a small bathroom window, accessed from the backyard. Losses were a laptop and cash.

MONDAY, APRIL 29

  • Drug arrest. A Newark man, 41, was arrested during a disturbance on Mayhews Landing Road at 10:47 p.m. for suspected possession of a controlled substance.

SUNDAY, APRIL 28

  • Car-buying dispute ends in arrest. A Newark man, 63, was arrested at his home for an alleged battery incident stemming from a dispute with Fremont Mazda over the purchase of a vehicle. The suspect reportedly created a disturbance at the dealership, and when asked to leave, physically assaulted one of the sales staff. 
  • Home burglary. A residential burglary was reported at 10 a.m. on the 36300 block of Cedar Boulevard, where intruders broke into a locked garage, making off with tools, a chain saw and a pole saw. 
  • Copper theft. A burglar on the 7100 block of Gateway Boulevard broke into an outbuilding on the property and stole copper piping and wiring.
