Crime Log: Naked Bust; Underage Driver Hits Kids, House; Birthing Dog Left Tied To Bench

Knives at school, scammers and more from Sept. 25 to Oct. 1.

The following are significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

Tuesday, Oct. 1

  • A restraining order violation -- an email contact -- was reported at 11:15 a.m. at a home on the 35000 block of Blackburn Drive. The suspected violator, a 22-year-old man, was notified of the restraining order at a Sept. 27 court hearing, but then rode by the victim’s house that evening. On Oct. 1, he contacted the victim via email. Officers contacted the man near the Perry Farms fruit stand in Ardenwood and he was arrested without incident. He was also in possession of a gravity knife. 
  • $10,000 reward offered in Fremont hit-and-run case. A 56-year-old bicyclist remains hospitalized after suffering critical injuries in an Aug. 8 hit-and-run in Fremont. Story here.
Monday, Sept. 30
  • Fourteen-year-old driver hits house, kids. A local hospital called police at 5:45 p.m. after a 3-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl were brought into the emergency room after reportedly being struck by a vehicle at Thornton Avenue and Spruce Street. Officers went to the reported accident area and learned the accident occurred in the driveway of a residence on the 7900 block of Thornton, where the children were struck by a minivan driven by a male, 14. The teen was moving the car so he could get his bicycle out of the garage and go to football practice. However he was unfamiliar with the car or how to drive and lost control, struck the children and crashed the van into the side of the house. Neither child suffered critical injuries. 
  • Fraudster rips off job applicant. A man posing as a job recruiter asked a woman to accept and deposit a check from his company into her bank account, then forward 90 percent of the funds to a different account and keep 10 percent of the check as a bonus. The victim followed instructions, quickly learned the suspect’s check bounced, and was unable to stop the transfer of funds from her account.  
  • Another scam attempt -- this time on CraigslistA woman listed her car for sale on Craigslist, and was contacted by a buyer, who sent her a check which was double the purchase price.  The "buyer" asked the victim to deposit the check and wire back to him the overpayment.  The victim became suspicious, called police and investigation revealed that the suspect’s check was fraudulent.

Sunday, Sept. 29
  • Abandoned dog tied to bench while having puppies. Officers were called at 8:22 a.m. to the Salisbury/Lake area after the discovery of a German Shepard tied to a bench who just gave birth to a puppy. The dog was transported to Central Vet giving birth to two more puppies during the ride. Throughout the day, a total of seven puppies were born. The dog was not marked with a computer chip, and there is no information on the dog's owner. 
  • Psychiatric detention at BART. A man was transported on a mental hold to Washington Hospital from Fremont BART after telling BART police he wanted to jump in front of a train. The subject had a $20,000 misdemeanor arrest warrant from Alameda County Sheriff’s Office for petty theft, and will be booked on the warrant when released.  
Saturday, Sept. 28
  • Busted naked. A naked couple was discovered inside a vehicle at 9 p.m. behind a business along 5400 Central Avenue. Both subjects were on searchable probation, allowing the officer to search the car. The male, from Newark, 50, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The woman, from Fremont, 28, was arrested for paraphernalia possession. 
  • Hotel stay abruptly ends after brawl in lobby. Police were called to the Holiday Inn in Fremont after five men began fighting in the lobby.  The hotel staff evicted the parties involved.  One was arrested for public intoxication.
Friday, Sept. 27
  • Wanted man hanging out after hours at family eatery. A citizen called at 2:44 a.m. to report a suspicious man loitering near La Cabana restaurant on Rich Avenue. When officers arrived, the male, a transient, 49, ran and hid inside the restaurant. The man's family owns the restaurant and he had a key. He also had a felony warrant. As an officer entered through an unlocked rear door, the man ran out the front and was arrested. 
  • Stolen vehicle set on fire. Fremont Fire called police at 9:50 a.m. to report a torched vehicle on Westinghouse Drive.  The vehicle, a two-door Honda Del Sol,  was stolen from San Jose.

Thursday, Sept. 26
  • Jewelry snatched. A “grab and run”  robbery of a 24K gold necklace and bracelet from Gems Jewelers on Cedar Boulevard was reported at 1:27 p.m. The suspect was described as a Vietnamese male, about 30 years old, 5-feet-3-inches and wearing a black jacket. 
Wednesday, Sept. 25
  • Knives at school. A juvenile was arrested at 11:28 a.m. for alleged for possession of multiple knives at Newark Memorial High School. The teen was involved in a dispute with campus authorities when contacted, and currently on juvenile probation with an ankle monitor. He was booked at Juvenile Hall and his probation officer was contacted.
