Crime Log: Arrests; Assaults; Burglaries

Neighborhood watch, and more from June 2 to 8.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between June 2 and 8 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

Saturday, June 8

  • Father arrested in Fremont crash that killed his wife, son. Gilbert Gil, 34, was arrested in Hayward Friday on two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of felony child endangerment, police said. Story here.

  • Neighboring police encourage home-security cameras. Read more here.
Thursday, June 6
  • More watchful eyes. Neighbors on Wembley Court are making their community safer with a Neighborhood Watch group created through the NPD. Residents interested in forming a group can contact: Tim Jones of the Community Engagement Division at (510) 578-4209 or email tim.jones@newark.org

  • Restraining order violator. Police arrested a Newark male, 49, at an apartment on the 37000 block of Locust Street for suspected violation of a domestic-violence restraining order.

Monday, June 3
  • Cedar Drive RV break-in. A burglary was reported at 9:30 a.m. at a recreational-vehicle storage facility on the 38000 block of Cedar Drive. The victim said his motorhome was broken into and several items taken. The RV yard management is contacting other customers to inventory their trailers and see if they, too, were victims. 
  • Man runs from cops and dog. A male walking from a vehicle at California Street and Central Avenue at 7:30 p.m. ignored a police request to stop, opting instead to take off, jumping a nearby fence. Police conducted a yard-to-yard canine search, but failed to find the man. The suspect, 23, later surrendered and was booked for resisting arrest at Fremont Jail.
Sunday, June 2
  • Assault arrest. Police responded to a verbal fight between a man and  woman at 3:45 p.m. on the 36200 block of Worthing Drive. The couple was arguing over an earlier physical altercation in which the man allegedly choked the female, threw a knife at her and after the knife missed her, he held the knife against her throat and threatened to kill her. The 45-year-old male was was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and death threats.
