Crime Log: Drunk and Naked 'Refugee'; Plus, A (Hold-Your-Breath) Fumigation Burglary

Warrant round-ups, and more from June 16 to 22.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between June 16 to 22 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

Saturday, June 22

  • Newark police encourage registration of commercial and home-surveillance cameras. Details here.
Friday, June 21
  • Vehicle checks pay off -- times three. While checking a vehicle at Sportsfield Park at 1:53 a.m., an officer cited a male, 31, for an outstanding traffic warrant. In a separate case at 2 a.m., while checking a vehicle at the Murieta Condos, police arrested a 20-year-old man for a misdemeanor larceny warrant. And at 2:33 a.m. while checking a vehicle at Cedar Boulevard and North Magazine Road, officers arrested a man, 30, for public intoxication.

Thursday, June 20
  • Jeep recovered. A Jeep Cherokee stolen from Fremont was discovered in the parking lot of BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse. Two white males wearing dark jackets, jeans and blue gloves were seen fleeing from the car. 
  • Home break-in during fumigation. A residential burglary was reported at 1 p.m. on Wintergreen Drive. Homeowners said the break-in apparently occurred during the past week while the house was tented for fumigation. The loss was not yet determined. 
Wednesday, June 19
  • Smash-n-grab. A window-smash auto burglary was reported at 10 p.m. at the Full Bloom Baking Co. on Overlake Place. Reported loss was a purse and its contents. 
Tuesday, June 18
  • Former Fremont elementary school teacher arrested on molestation charges. Full story here.
  • Walking and wanted. A homeless Newark man, 46, was arrested during an 8:48 p.m. pedestrian stop behind Newpark Mall for an outstanding, no-bail warrant.

Monday, June 17
  • Union City boy killed by pit bullFull story here.
  • Self-surrender for theft. A Newark man, 19, turned himself in at 10:17 a.m. at police headquarters for his no-bail, outstanding petty theft warrant.  
Sunday, June 16
  • Drunk AND naked at wildlife refuge. At 3:23 a.m., a Newark male, 34, was arrested after officers found him intoxicated, passed out and naked in a parked vehicle at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Widlife Refuge.
  • Fremont man armed with a knife shot and killed by police officers. At about 6:45 a.m., dispatch received a 911 call from a woman requesting help with her mentally ill adult son, according to Fremont police. Full story here.
