Crime Log: Sketchy on Hetchy; Suspected Ecstasy, Pot Dealer Nabbed at Traffic Stop

Truck collides with house, car hits trash cans, and more from July 21 to 27.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between July 21 to 27 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

Saturday, July 27

  • Truck crashes into Sycamore Street home. No one was hurt when a small pickup truck crashed into a Newark residence around 8 p.m. The driver reportedly lost control after suffering a medical problem, witnesses said. See photo here.
Friday, July 26 
  • Police arrest suspected ringleader of shoplifting gang. Victoria's Secret at Stoneridge Mall was frequent target. Details here.
Thursday, July 25
  • Bonnie break-in. A residential burglary along Bonnie Street was reported at 8:30 a.m.Suspects removed a security screen to gain entry.
  • Another on Bettencourt. A home break-in was reported at 10 a.m. on Bettencourt Street, where intruders entered sometime overnight through an unlocked rear sliding door.  
  • Catalytic converts swiped. Theft of a catalytic converter from a vehicle on Sheridan Court occurred overnight. 
Wednesday, July 24
  • Son pushes pop, fights with cop. Police were dispatched at 6:30 a.m. to a home on Birch Street where a Newark male, 56, reportedly pushed his father, then left the house. He was subsequently arrested for suspected public intoxication, resisting arrest and battery against a peace officer. His father declined prosecution.
  • Drug dealer busted. During a 9 p.m. traffic stop, a Newark man, 21, was arrested for suspected possession for sales of marijuana and MDMA (Ecstasy). He was booked at Fremont City Jail. 
Tuesday, July 23
  • DUI arrest. A Newark male, 21, was arrested for suspected driving under the influence at 12:15 a.m. He was cited from the station.
  • Order violator. A Newark male, 46, was arrested at 9:43 p.m. for allegedly violating a restraining order and possession of a controlled substance. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail, Dublin.
Monday, July 22
  • Bad driver. A Newark man, 18, was arrested for hit-and-run, after he was seen at 12:46 p.m. speeding and driving recklessly on Fountaine Avenue at Cherry Street. The suspect skidded onto the front yard of a residence hitting several trash cans, and then fled the area without stopping and talking to the property owner. 
  • Teen shoplifter.  A juvenile female was arrested at 4:30 p.m. for shoplifting items from Raley’s.
  • Hetchy sketchy. An officer was dispatched at 7 p.m. to Wintergreen near the Hetch Hetchy property for a report of subjects parking vehicles and walking to the motels. The officer recovered two unoccupied vehicles stolen out of Oakland.
Sunday, July 21
  • Dodgy couple up to no good. Police responding to a suspicious-vehicle call at 1:43 a.m. at Graham Elementary School saw a man and woman take off on a motorcycle. They drove about 30 yards before the male laid the bike on its side and ran. Eventually arrested were a Hayward man, 30, for resisting arrest, possession of a stun gun by a prohibited person and a felony warrant, and his companion, a female transient, 31, for two misdemeanor warrants.   • Probation search yields drugs. During a 4 p.m. probation search on Fountaine Avenue, police arrested a Hayward man, 29, for suspected possession of drug paraphernalia, and a Newark male, 32, for a felony warrant and possession of a controlled substance. 
  • Shoplift arrest. A 22-year-old from Union City was placed under citizen's arrest for shoplifting at 7:30 p.m. at NewPark Mall JCPenney. The suspect was cited for theft and released at the scene by police.
