Crime Log: Man Steals Copper Wire From Old Movie Theater; Burglars Target Vehicles and Homes

Brief reports on crimes that occurred in Newark from Oct. 8-12.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Oct. 8 and Oct. 12 as released by the Newark Police Department.

MONDAY, OCT. 8

Man Steals Copper Wire From Old Movie Theater

A 51-year-old Fremont man was arrested after a property manager of the vacant Cinedome building heard footsteps from the roof around 10:50 p.m. Police found the man as he was stripping copper wire from the facility’s air-conditioning units. He was arrested on suspicion of grand theft, possession of burglary tools and vandalism.

Boy Crashes Family Car into Motel Room

A Fullerton man was arrested after his 8-year-old son took the family's car and crashed it into a Newark motel room Monday night. Police said the child took the car with the intent to go for a joy ride but he ended up crashing into the motel room his parents were sleeping in. His father was arrested in connection to an outstanding theft-related warrant out of Orange County.

TUESDAY, OCT. 9

Minors Steal Laptop From House Porch

Two male minors were arrested after police were called to Joaquin Murieta around 2 p.m. to investigate a residential burglary that was just interrupted. The two suspects fled toward Ohlone Community College’s Newark campus, but police were able to catch the pair. The minors were arrested on suspicion of theft. Police said the two had taken a package containing a laptop that was left outside of the home for UPS to pick up. The two were cited and released to their parents.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 10

Police Arrest Pair After Brass Knuckles, Burglary Tools Found

Two Fremont men, ages 23 and 21, were arrested after police were called to the 6800 block of Mayhews Landing Road around 2:20 a.m. and found the two. Authorities said the pair were in possession of “jiggler” keys and brass knuckles. The two were arrested and booked into Fremont Jail.

Drunk Driver Follows Ambulance Too Closely

A 27-year-old Fremont woman was arrested around 3 a.m. after police saw a weaving vehicle following an ambulance closely. A police officer was able to stop the driver, who was arrested and cited on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Husband Arrested After Officers Learn He Strangled, Beat Wife

Police responded to a home near Moores Avenue around 10 a.m. to investigate a report of a domestic battery between a married couple. Authorities said the husband, a 31-year-old Newark man, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence after officers learned he strangled and beat his wife several days before police arrived. Officers said the woman still had visible injuries and that the domestic violence was determined after statements from the husband, wife and their children.

Vehicles Vandalized, Stolen

One car was reported stolen and one car was found burglarized between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The stolen vehicle was reported around 10:15 a.m. from the 36800 block of Sycamore Street and is described as a white 1992 Ford Econoline van with a California licence plate of 8S49674. The auto burglary was reported around 3:40 p.m. and believed to have occurred around 9 a.m. Police said the vehicle was parked on the 36900 block of Cherry Street and that the burglar(s) broke a window and took the car’s audio speakers. Police also found a stolen vehicle out of Oakland around 6 p.m. on the 36000 block of Hafner Street

Home Burglarized

A home was found burglarized on the 6300 block of Lafayette Avenue just before 6 p.m.

THURSDAY, OCT. 11

Woman Arrested for Battery

A 25-year-old Pittsburg woman was arrested around 6:40 p.m. on suspicion of resisting arrest, providing false information, battery and violating parole.

FRIDAY, OCT. 12                 

Man Caught Stealing from JC Penney’s

A 25-year-old Hayward man was arrested after police were called to JC Penney’s to investigate a shoplifting incident. The man was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting.

Two Arrested During Eviction of 30 Motel Guests

Police were called to patrol the area of Motel 6 around 11:10 p.m. while a security guard evicted guests staying in two rooms. Authorities said 30 people were staying in the rooms. While evacuating, a Newark man and a Newark woman, both 21, were arrested on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Newark Man Arrested After Late-Night Robbery

A 28-year-old Newark man was arrested on suspicion of robbery after police were called to investigate a robbery in the area of Thornton Avenue and Cedar Boulevard just after 11:30 p.m.
