Crime Log: Man Bound and Gagged in Motel 6 Robbery; Car Stolen From Dealership During Test Drive

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Feb. 14 and Feb. 18 as released by the Newark Police Department.

THURSDAY, FEB. 14

7-Eleven robbed at gunpoint

A clerk at the 7-Eleven at 39620 Cedar Blvd. was robbed at gunpoint at around 7:50 p.m. The suspect entered the business, threatened a clerk with a handgun and demanded money before fleeing on foot. The suspect was described as a 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-4 black male adult between the ages of 20 and 25 years old, weighing approximately 190 pounds with a slim build. He was wearing a blue colored hoodie had his face covered.

SATURDAY, FEB. 16

Couple arrested after stealing, fighting with security at mall

A 24-year-old San Francisco man and his 21-year-old girlfriend were arrested after a scuffle with JC Penney security officers. Security attempted to make a citizen’s arrest on the male suspect on suspicion of shoplifting at around 6 p.m. The suspect put up a fight and injured two of the officers in the process. The suspect’s girlfriend tried to intervene with the arrest. In the end, the male suspect was arrested on suspicion of robbery and the girlfriend was arrested on suspicion of battery and making threats.

SUNDAY, FEB. 17

Man arrested after attempted hit-and-run

Officers responded to a report of a vehicle rollover collision near the intersection of Mayhews Landing and Hazelnut roads at around 2:50 a.m. The vehicle hit multiple parked cars. Neighbors, waken up by the sound of the collision, quickly went outside and helped the driver get out of the vehicle. The driver, however, ran away on foot. Officers eventually located the driver, a 24-year-old Newark man, and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving without a license.

Drunk driver arrested

A 30-year-old Redwood City woman was arrested after her car veered off the road, went through a city fence and ended up in the marshlands near Kiote Drive. Officers responded at about 7 p.m. and, after investigating, arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence. A passenger was also arrested on suspicion of public intoxication.

Man bound and gagged during robbery at Motel 6

A man was bound and gagged with duct tape inside of a room at Motel 6. Officers responded to the hotel at about 8 p.m. where the victim told police that he was robbed by two armed suspects who tied him up inside of a room. The victim managed to free himself and call police. The suspects were last seen in a dark colored Cadillac Escalade.

MONDAY, FEB. 18

Car stolen from dealership during test drive

A patron at the Fremont Dodge dealership went for a test drive of a 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 Superbee — and never came back. Officers were sent to the dealership, located at 39639 Balentine Dr., at 9:34 a.m. where they learned that the suspect presented a driver's license and requested a test drive. A salesman started the car first and then took the suspect’s driver’s license inside to make a copy. While the salesman was inside, the suspect took off with the car. The car was entered into the stolen vehicle database.
