Crime Log: Man Attempts Suicide on Train Tracks; Mother and Daughter Arrested for Theft

Brief reports on crimes that occurred in Newark from Oct. 1-7.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7 as released by the Newark Police Department.

MONDAY, OCT. 1

Wanted Man Crashes into Vehicle After Failing to Stop for Police

One man was arrested and another was hospitalized after a vehicle accident on Central Avenue and Filbert Street around 1:40 p.m. Police said the 29-year-old man who was arrested failed to stop for police who were attempting to stop him and began weaving in and out of lanes at 20 MPH until he crashed to another vehicle. The suspect was arrested after a brief struggle with officers. Medical personnel determined the man has a medical condition that impairs his driving, but the man was arrested on suspicion of driving on a suspended license and for outstanding warrants related to domestic violence battery and driving on a suspended license from neighboring counties. The 52-year-old Hayward man whose vehicle was struck was treated at local hospital.

20-Year-Old Arrested After Police Find Alcohol in Purse

A 20-year-old woman was arrested after police were called to a report of a disturbance at E-Z 8 Motel around 10:30 p.m. and were told that the suspects had fled the area. Officers were able to locate the suspects and while during a “consent search” police found marijuana in the car and alcohol in the underaged woman’s purse. She was booked into Fremont Jail.

TUESDAY, OCT. 2

Pair Arrested After Theft Out of Raley’s

A 26-year-old Oakland man and a 22-year-old Oakland woman were arrested after police were called to investigate a shoplifting incident just before 2 p.m. out of Raley’s. The woman was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery and for an outstanding warrant, while the man was arrested on suspicion of petty theft. The two were cited and released from the police station.

Man Attempts to Commit Suicide on Railroad Tracks

An armed man was detained Tuesday afternoon after threatening to commit suicide on a set of train tracks. According to the Newark Police Department, the entire shift, along with assistance from neighboring agencies, responded to area of Cedar Boulevard and St. Isabel Avenue at about 4:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a man sitting on a couch on the railroad tracks. The man, who was reportedly carrying a handgun, was waiting for a train to strike him, according to a police report.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 3

Two Burglaries in One Hour

A home burglary and an auto burglary were reported between noon and 1 p.m. within 1.2 miles from each other. The residential burglary, which was interrupted, was reported on the 5800 block of Saint Paul Drive just after noon, while the auto burglary was reported on the 37000 block of Magnolia Street around 12:45 p.m.

THURSDAY, OCT. 4

Two Thefts, One Home Burglary During Working Hours

Police were called to investigate two incidents of theft and one residential burglary between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The first theft was reported on the 7300 block of Carter Avenue. Just after 1 p.m., a 38-year-old Fremont resident was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting out of Macy’s at NewPark Mall. Three hours later, police were called to the 36000 block of Bonnie Street after it was reported that the home was ransacked. Police said the burglar(s) pried open a side garage door.

FRIDAY, OCT. 5

Man Arrested After Burglary Report

A 23-year-old Fremont man was arrested after police were called to an active burglary on the 35000 block of Newark Boulevard. Police said the man was seen exiting the structure he broke into and was arrested.

Trio Arrested After Attempted Robbery

Police were called to E-Z 8 Motel around 4 a.m. after a report of an attempted robbery and the brandishing of a gun. Police said a 23-year-old Fremont man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery, and a 39-year-old Washington man and 29-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drug offenses.

SATURDAY, OCT. 6

Man Arrested After Assault With a Deadly Weapon

A 51-year-old Newark man was arrested after police were called to the 6100 block of Market Avenue when an assault with a deadly weapon incident was reported around 4:30 p.m.

SUNDAY, OCT. 7

Mother-Daughter Theft Team Cited

A 41-year-old Union City woman and her 19-year-old daughter, also from Union City, were arrested after police were called to investigate a theft out of JC Penney's at NewPark Mall around 4 p.m. The pair was cited and released

Robber Nabs Necklace From Elderly Woman

An elderly woman was robbed of her gold necklace after a suspect ripped the chain from her neck by NewPark Mall's entrance 4. The suspect fled in a red vehicle but no detailed suspect description was available.

I saw a cop car and fire truck a few houses down on my street.
