Crime Log: Car Thief Found Sleeping at Gas Station; Man Starts Fight with Police Officer

A summary of crimes and traffic and fire incidents reported in Newark during the week of Dec. 3.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Dec. 3 and Dec. 9 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

MONDAY, DEC. 3

Home Burglary Leads to Car Chase, School Lockdown

A man was arrested after a reported home burglary led to a brief car chase  and a school lockdown, police said.The burglary was reported shortly before noon Monday on the 6200 block of Madeline Drive after a witness reported seeing several men trying to "force entry" into a home on that street then left the area in a vehicle, according to a Newark police statement. Police said an officer attempted to stop the suspects' vehicle but the driver failed to stop and instead "lost control of the vehicle and struck another motorist" near Mayhews Landing Road and Spruce Street. Police said no injuries were reported, but the suspects fled from the vehicle. Click here to read the full report.

Shoplifter Caught at Home Depot

A 56-year-old Fremont resident was arrested and cited on suspicion of petty theft out of Home Depot shortly after 7 p.m.

Drunk Man Arrested After Report of Bar Fight

A 30-year-old Menlo Park man was arrested after police were notified that a fight was happening inside of Whiskeytown Bar around 10:10 p.m. Police said several calls came in about the fight but that once officers arrived, witnesses would not cooperate. One person did get arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public and he was booked into Fremont Jail.

TUESDAY, DEC. 4

Missing Girls from Florida Found Safe in Newark

Two young children reported missing and endangered from Florida were found safe in Newark on Tuesday, according to police. The two children were found shortly around 2:30 p.m. and were put into protective custody due to a Florida court order, according to authorities. The pair was reported missing from Melbourne, Fla., police said. Media outlets in Florida reported that the children, along with their parents, were last seen in the city of Melbourne and a search for the family of four launched after police uncovered a potential suicide pact. Read the full report here

Wanted Woman Found Sleeping on Sidewalk

A 36-year-old Newark woman was arrested after she was found sleeping on a sidewalk on Cherry Street near Smith Avenue. She was arrested for two outstanding warrants and was booked into Fremont Jail.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 5

Home Found Ransacked

A house on the 5300 block of Milani Avenue was found ransacked shortly before 4 p.m.

Six Automobiles Burglarized

Police investigated six different reports of auto burglaries. The burglaries were reported as follows:

  • One auto burglary  the 35600 block of Scarborough Drive around 6:20 a.m. in which a window was smashed and an empty briefcase was taken.
  • Two auto burglaries were reported around 7:40 a.m. on the 35600 block of Blackburn Drive in which windows were smashed.
  • An auto burglary was reported around 8 a.m. on the 35500 block of Farnham Drive where a window was smashed and a laptop and cell phone were taken.
  • Another auto burglary was reported on the 35200 block of Farnham Drive in which the window was smashed and sunglasses, CDs and iPhone charging cords were taken.
  • A wallet and City of San Leandro access card were stolen from a vehicle on the 4900 block of Farnham Drive around 4:30 p.m.

THURSDAY, DEC. 6

Pair Sought After Hopping Fence, Fleeing

Police responded to the 5500 block of Fernwood Drive around 2:30 p.m. after a witness reported seeing two male suspects jumping the fence from a backyard of a home to the front of the house and fleeing the area. The two were last seen leaving in a 1998 Gold Honda Accord with two missing hubcaps on the rear wheels and the vehicle was last seen traveling on Lafayette Avenue toward Cedar Boulevard. The suspects were both described as Hispanic men who are both about 5-foot-6 tall. One was described as having long, black, curly, shoulder-length hair and was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and the other was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, police said.

Man Starts Fight with Police Officer

While patrolling at E-Z 8 Motel, an officer made contact with a 21-year-old Willits resident around 8:40 p.m. who became immediately became “defiant” and proceeded to “square off and fight” with the officer, police said. The officer called for backup and was able to handcuff the man but the man became “combative” and tried to reach his waistband, police said. While this was occurring, a group of “anti-police citizens” came from some nearby motel rooms and began walking toward the officer who then summoned his K-9 partner who stayed by the officer’s side until additional units arrived. The man was eventually detained and arrested. Police learned the man was resistant because he said he thought he had a felony warrant and “didn’t want to go to jail,” police said. The man was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

FRIDAY, DEC. 7

Car Thief Found Sleeping at Gas Station

A suspected car thief was arrested after police were called to check on him when a passer-by spotted the man sleeping in a vehicle parked in the gas pump area of the Lido 76 Gas Station. Police contacted the 33-year-old Hayward man and found he had an outstanding felony warrant and that the vehicle he was driving and a motorcycle trailer attached to his vehicle were reported stolen. The man was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and for possession of a meth pipe. He was booked into Fremont Jail.

Drunk Driver Causes Collision

A 46-year-old Fremont man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and hit-and-run after a hit-and-run collision occurred on Cherry Street and Graham Avenue shortly before 7:25 p.m. Police said the victim pursued the suspect to Sycamore Street near Clark Avenue,

Drunken Driver Causes Accident in Parking Lot

A 21-year-old Fremont woman was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving around 1 a.m. after police were called to investigate a traffic collision at the parking lot of BJ’s restaurant.

Three Vehicles Found Vandalized

Three vehicles were found vandalized in the parking lot of Motel 6 shortly around 7:45 a.m. Police believe the vandalism occurred after 11 p.m. Saturday

Man Arrested After Running from Police

A 49-year-old homeless man was arrested after running from an officer who tried to contact him while he was walking on Thornton Avenue near Highway 880. Police said the man ran off but was shortly detained and police found that he was in possession of a glass-smoking pipe. The man was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and possession of a meth pipe. He was booked into Fremont Jail.
