Congressman Honda Visits Head Start Class at Whiteford School

Submitted by the office of Congressman Mike Honda—

Yesterday, Congressman Mike Honda (D-Silicon Valley) visited a Head Start classroom at the Whiteford School in Newark.

Honda saw firsthand the positive impact of constructive learning programs and use of technology to track student progress. Head Start programs like ones at the Whiteford School are giving our children early opportunities to succeed by providing high quality instruction.

Congressman Honda led the efforts to restore the funds for Head Start that had been reduced in previous budget cuts (known as “Sequestration”).  $8.6 billion in funding was secured for Head Start in the current fiscal year, which is sufficient to both fully restore the cuts and to invest in the Obama Administration’s Early Head Start-Child Care Partnerships.

Early childhood education is one of the priority areas included in the Equity and Excellence Commission’s report “For Each and Every Child.” The commission, created by Congressman Honda, examined ways to improve our education system to ensure each and every child has an equitable chance to receive an excellent education.
