Car Collides With Bicycle, Seriously Injuring Cyclist

Streets were closed to allow first responders to help the survivors.

A car collided with a bicyclist on Stevenson Boulevard Friday afternoon, forcing Newark Police to reroute traffic.

At about 2:45 p.m., police officers responded to reports that a gold Honda Accord had collided with a bicycle on Stevenson Boulevard by Cherry Street.   Only one person was in the Accord, according to Newark Police.

Police are investigating the reason the car collided with the cyclist, according to Sergeant Lee, Newark Police Department’s on-duty watch commander.  The cyclist was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover from his injuries. His name is being withheld to protect his privacy.

Investigators do not suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor, according to Sergeant Lee.

Westbound traffic on Stevenson Boulevard and southbound Cherry Street were being rerouted as of 5:38 p.m. The roads are expected to open at about 6 p.m.
