Armed Man Detained After Attempting Suicide on Railroad Tracks

The man placed a couch on the tracks and was waiting for a train, police said.

An armed man was detained Tuesday afternoon after threatening to commit suicide on a set of train tracks.

According to the Newark Police Department, the entire shift, along with assistance from neighboring agencies, responded to area of Cedar Boulevard and St. Isabel Avenue at about 4:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a man sitting on a couch on the railroad tracks.

The man, who was reportedly carrying a handgun, was waiting for a train to strike him, according to a police report.

The man eventually surrendered and was placed under psychiatric hold.
