Accident on Cherry St. Rerouted Traffic

14-year-old injured in car accident.

Cherry St. reopened Friday afternoon, after Newark Police closed a portion of the street to investigate an accident that sent a 14-year-old girl to the hospital.

At about 7:30 a.m. the girl was walking eastbound on Cherry St. in the cross walk by Robertson Avenue when a Honda Civic struck her. She suffered major injuries and was transported to a local trauma care center, according to a Newark Police spokesperson.  The 65-year-old driver remained at the scene to help police with the investigation.

The southbound lane of Cherry Street at the intersections of Central Avenue and Robertson Avenue was closed until 1:40 p.m. Police said they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were a factor at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
