Need to Know: Meetings, Music, Walk-a-Thon, Job Hunting, Carnival

From little kids to mid-life job seekers, just about everyone can find something they want — or need — to do in Newark this week, Oct. 24-30.

Need to Know appears every Monday on Newark Patch. Leave tips for future Need to Know columns in the comment section below.

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through Oct. 30.

1. Get civic-minded — attend a city meeting. The Newark Planning Commission meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 37101 Newark Blvd. The City Council meets Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the same location. You can download agendas for both meetings at the city website. (Update: the agenda originally posted for Tuesday's planning commission was incorrect. A new agenda is being posted Tuesday afternoon.)

3. Saturday's a busy day in Newark. Start out at 10 a.m. by cheering on participants in the NMHS Athletic Walk-A-Thon fundraiser at Newark Memorial High School, 39375 Cedar Blvd. A $5-per-person barbecue follows at 11:30 a.m. (free for walkers who bring in at least $100 in sponsorships). If you can volunteer to help out, contact Sandra at sschroetlin@sbcglobal.net.

Participants will be able to purchase a copy of her book. The event is free, but advance registration is required. Sign up at the library's information desk, call Barbara at 510-795-2627, ext. 20 or e-mail btelford-ishida@aclibrary.org.

5. And now for just plain fun! The Newark Community Carnival starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at , 38517 Birch St. Enjoy carnival games, face painting, inflatable jumpers, carnival food, lots of candy, a maze, music and a skit. Come in costume if you wish. Admission is free, although there's a charge for some activities.
