Need to Know: Elections 2011, Relay for Life Kick Off, 'Grease' Showing Opens

This week, Relay for Life 2012 kicks off, Newark voters choose their new civic leaders, and NMHS debuts its fall show.

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark this week.

1. Get a head start on preparation of the Newark Relay for Life 2012 event at the . Learn about the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event and how you can take part either as a volunteer or a team captain. The meet up begins at 6:30 p.m. at Mountain Mike’s Pizza, 5333 Thornton Ave.

2. Take part in history on Tuesday by heading to the polls and voting for Newark’s first new mayor in 33 years. Also vote for who will serve on Newark’s city council and whether to approve a $63 million school bond measure on Election Day. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

3. The City Council will meet Thursday in a regular meeting that will begin at 7:30 p.m. at , 37101 Newark Blvd..  Two public hearings will be held during the meeting: the consideration of an amendment to a conditional use permit to install a liquid nitrogen tank at Matheson Tri-Gas and to consider a six-month review of a conditional use permit for Little Flowers Montessori School. 4. Friday is Veteran’s Day and that means City Hall will be closed. Newark Unified School District’s schools will also be closed.

5. Grease lightning will hit this weekend. The Newark Memorial High School’s Drama Club will open its on Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.Visit http://www.nmhsdrama.com.
