With Faith and Passion, Nothing is Impossible

Patch contributor Lauren Lola begins a blog and talks about how to motivate youth to pursue their goals and ambitions in life.

To the kids, teens and other young individuals of Newark: Have you ever had a dream you find/found impossible to pursue?  Have you always wanted to be on American Idol?  Do you want to be the one to discover the cure to cancer?  Do you want to be the president of the United States one day?

These are all really big dreams, right?  You probably have had people put you down beforehand and tell you that “you can’t do it” or “it’s impossible to accomplish; choose a different profession” or something along those lines.

Well guess what?  It’s not impossible!

All those individuals who are putting you down are just bad seeds in your environment who are not looking at the big picture. As cliché as this may sound: Anything is possible. You just have to be the one to drive yourself to do whatever it is that you want to do in life.

At this point you probably think that this is overly repetitive advice that only brings hopes way too high. Well guess what? I’m speaking from experience!

I recall pacing back and forth in my room, hands feeling ever so slightly sweaty, with an adrenaline rush that was about to reach its peak. All I was waiting for was the phone to ring to begin my interview and when it finally did, I was somehow able to ease into the moment and get into the “journalist mindset.”

Ianswered the phone and after exchanging a few words with the publicist, my interview began with someone I never thought I’d find myself speaking with; film director Brian Dannelly.

In mid-April I conducted a 10-minute phone interview with Dannelly on the making of his latest film, “Struck By Lightning,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City less than 24 hours before.

I asked him questions regarding why he pursued the project, what it was like filming a movie in a little over two weeks, the challenges that came with filming and what it was like working with screenwriter/producer/Golden Globe-winning actor Chris Colfer. (Read the article regarding the interview here.)

It was another one of those moments where to this day I cannot believe I was able to pull off.

Dannelly was one of many public figures I’ve had the honor of interviewing within the past year; other people including film director Quentin Lee, actor Booboo Stewart, YouTube singer Clara C and even Bay Area locals such as film director James Z. Feng, mash-up artist DJ Earworm and former Newark mayor David Smith.

While I am a Communication major at CSU East Bay and therefore am learning the way of the journalist, not a lot of college-aged students would actually go out of their way to attempt contacting people such as the ones that I’ve named.

Therefore, it’s mind-boggling in that sense for someone my age to go far out like that. Maybe what is just as mind-boggling is that I was just another graduate from only two years ago and it’s “crazy” what I’ve proved myself to do and accomplish since then.

Notice how I put quotes around the word “crazy” it that last sentence.  It may be crazy to some but the reality is, it was something that can be done.

The same or similar outcomes can happen for anyone, regardless of whatever they want to do in life.

As long as you have the right mindset and the right attitude to do so and are more than willing to take on any obstacles that come your way, then the rest will come to you as time goes on. You just got to believe in yourself.

And with that, this is where I send you off with these cliché words of advice: “Just Do It,” “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Never Say Never.”

To read some of the interviews I was referring to, search my name at http://thepioneeronline.com/.

This was a nice, motivational, pleasant article to read. It's too bad people like you, Suzy, are too jaded and short-sighted to see that. Was it cheesy? Sure. Was it newsworthy? No. But who cares? You act as though the Newark Patch is some Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, like the WSJ or the NYT, if you think they shouldn't "waste space" on such "drivel." What shouldn't be wasted is space on comments from someone like you- a person who clearly has the world's biggest chip on her shoulder. And how dare you minimize the accomplishments Lauren has made? Just because you don't respect the people she has interviewed doesn't give you the right to call them "third-rate fakes" and "never-beens." You just like to belittle people, don't you? Maybe you should grow up because you're acting like an immature little brat. If you have kids I feel sorry for them because apparently they will never be able to right by you because you will find fault in everything they've accomplished. You are a nasty, cranky, b**** and you should stop trying to make people feel bad for what they've done. Please, you own a burrito shop... are we all supposed to be impressed with THAT? That's hilarious. At least Lauren is out there doing what she loves, and enjoying it, and getting an education in both academic journalism and real world journalism. You? You're making burritos for people like me. YOUR head is in the clouds if you don't see how pathetic you are, in more ways than one.

Teach,
I may be wrong here but I believe the Individual Posting as one of Newark's City Council Members was in fact a Impersonator attempting to muddy that Members name in Public. This has happened before except with Newark's former Mayor Dave Smith. I'm even willing to bet it's the same Individual. Don't get Trolled, it might make you look really bad when the real person reads what you have typed, hence no Justification.

Are you really city council woman Collazo? If so, you should be recalled. I expect city office holders to encourage all Newark students to continue their education and to pursue their dreams. No field is safe in these economic uncertain times. I did not realize that city council seats could be bought. I would think that you would realize that your birth control and Craig List comments smack of cyber bullying. I hope that Patch checks to see if this is indeed from our city council woman as I will not be voting for you again. Lauren I applaud students following their dreams and am impressed with your progress on making your own dreams come true.

That's great to hear! We have a full list of locations in Newark, via Newark Unified, here:Read More http://newark.patch.com/groups/schools/p/newark-unified-offers-free-summer-lunches-for-community-children

Geoff, I did not know that Fathers could be part of the PTA, too. Just did some research about theRead More PTA and am now a little wiser on the Subject. Since your a member of the PTA, have you thought about registering your School with the Coke Rewards program? They allow members to donate points to Schools and out of every school in Newark the only one registered with them is St Edwards. Basically people go to the MyCokeRewards website and input the codes found on the caps and receive points then can use those points to redeem rewards or donate supplies to Schools. It's an interesting Program, if you have some time you should check it out! It's a way to lessen the burden of limited funds for the next school year.

I'd suggest working thru the Principal at NMHS with less speculation. I too was involved with PTA,Read More Newark Schools Fdn, Jaycees and other non-profits. Best practices are that the one handling, depositing money not also be the one keeping books. A great volunteer shouldnt be put under suspicion without there being group neglect. By-laws and an active Board can cleanup this miscommunication. The school Principal is the MOD.

I agree 100% with CT

Good response Teddy, and truth.
Bong Sativa June 17, 2013 at 05:57 am
The more likely explanation is that the vast majority of Newark Police officers lack the requisiteRead More aptitude & agility necessary to fill shopping bags with groceries & didn't want to do anything to further embarrass themselves while under the scrutiny of the bewildered shoppers like James.
Teddy June 17, 2013 at 12:12 pm
Bong Sativa maybe you can meet Officer Indica.

Could it be that, because busloads of inner city non resident children jam the place, someone wiselyRead More decided to make the hours available to Newark taxpayers first?
Audrey June 15, 2013 at 10:27 am
Yes they are walking as I write this! but it is not to late to sponsor them! please!!!
Mona Taplin June 13, 2013 at 04:03 am
This probably sounds heartless, but it sounds like this house should be condemned before a tragedyRead More occurs. I doubt if any organization can bring it up to code because of the cost. It's really sad to see this happening to a working person in this country.
Adam Moe June 13, 2013 at 09:47 am
I'm not sure if your mom will qualify but there are lines of credit out there that she can get as aRead More home owner. It will require her to have the income to pay back small portions at a time. Not trying to make it harder just trying to help. See about it online or let me know more and I'll see what I can do to help.
Teddy June 16, 2013 at 07:00 am
Mona Taplin you are right on re: all your remarks.

Thanks James!, You know it's amazing when somebody puts their own personal time to learn andRead More understand something and then you share it... I would have been more then glad to explained myself in more detail face-to-face because I may learn something myself but like a marriage you don't get on here and start posting every little detail about you and your wife and I'm not going to get on here and start posting every little detail about my past employer`s. So to whoever flagged me you could have simply posted a disagreement and I'm open-minded and can admit when I make a mistake...I would've simply deleted my post if you could've proved it wrong.

Tony, You are an upstanding individual, glad you joined the Patch! ;)

I would also like to point out that I have on two other occasions asked this Mike Bucci guy the sameRead More question and each time I am Ignored. If this is what us Newark Residents can expect from an aspiring Politician then he can keep his day job! We already have enough Status Quo people in our gov failing to answer the simple questions.

Landline? That's like so 15 years ago! People still do home telephone services? Wow!

UPDATE! Just got a call this morning from a neighbor of the man who owned them. The gentleman diedRead More Mon or Tues and the poor dogs hadn't been well taken care of for years - slept outside, no affection, etc. Long story short - the neighbor wants to adopt them! YAY! <3
