Summer Ends and Back-to-School Begins

Kat Blair is a librarian at Newark Library. In this blog, she talks about how the library is gearing up for the start of the 2011-12 school year.

Just when it seemed like it was getting started! The weather has been on again, off again in the hot department, but I'm not complaining! We've had it good compared to the rest of the United States.

Here at the Newark Library we are getting used to the idea that we won't have Saturday programming for the kiddies anymore. Instead we are gearing up for Friday Toddler Times and Preschool Storytimes again. We do this throughout the school year. So those will start on the first Friday of September at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.

We are starting off slowly with a tribute to Winnie the Pooh's 90th birthday this Saturday. We have some coloring sheets for Winnie and some free books that we are able to give away due to some marvelous donations we have received.

In case you didn't know, we also have some marvelous de-junking and tech swap programs for adultsΒ on September 10, starting at 10 a.m.Β as well. You will need to register for some of our adult programs, like the Dejunking one, so call Barbara Telford-Ishida at (510) 795-2627 x 20 or email her at btelford-ishida@aclibrary.org for more information.

Not to leave out the teens, there are two ways you can get involved here at Newark Library this month. We will be starting Homework Express, where you help tutor younger kids with their homework and you will need to fill out an application and come to a mandatory Orientation very soon. So come to the Information Desk and ask, or contact Kathleen Hannon at (510) 795-2627 x 18 (or email her at khannon@aclibrary.org). And the other way to get involved is to come check out the Teen Advisory Group and help us figure out how to spend our money, I mean, how to arrange our teen programming, so teens have some fun things to do at the Library.

That's all for now - I hope to see you soon @ the Library. Just stop on by and say hey to Miz Kat.
