Family members have started an online fund to help pay for funeral costs for Ashley Capuchin, a 19-year-old Newark mother who was struck by a vehicle and killed on New Year’s Eve.

Capuchin’s family hopes to raise $10,000 via crowdfunding website GiveForward, according to Darleen Butler Ochoa, Capuchin's aunt.

Capuchin was carrying her 3-month-old baby and was with her 17-year-old sister when all three were hit by a truck in the busy intersection of Paseo Padre Parkway and Mowry Avenue in Fremont around 9:55 p.m.

Ochoa said Capuchin had faced hardships in her young life but maintained a positive outlook, especially with the recent birth of Salvador.

"Her baby was her life," Ochoa told Patch.

Capuchin was looking forward to 2014 and had planned on returning to school to make a better life for her and her son.

"Ashley was a very loving, caring, kind person," Ochoa said. "She had a very big heart."
