Week in Review: Police Raid, Quakes Shakes East Bay, Oil Refinery Plant Talks Future

Newark residents woke up to find sirens and police swarming a neighborhood between Thornton and Central avenues Thursday . Four people were arrested. The raid was part of an investigation, headed by the Fremont Police Department, of a series of armed robberies.

After a 5.8 magnitude struck the East Coast, the East Bay was hit with a 3.6 quake – twice. The was felt shortly after 11:35 p.m. on Tuesday, and just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. The epicenter for both quakes was approximately 3 miles northeast of San Leandro with a depth of 5.7 miles

The five men facing charges in connection with Newark’s pot club appeared in court for the first time this week. None entered a plea, but the attorney representing all of them . According to the District Attorney’s Office, the five individuals are facing 30 charges collectively.

Evergreen Oil Refinery as part of its community outreach efforts. Evergreen’s management team have announced their plans to start re-refining oil again by September and told Newark residents they have upped their safety procedures in operating the plant.

Newark’s Planning Commission moved the Dumbarton Transit-Oriented Development project forward this week with that calls for the development of about 200 acres of land on the west side of Newark. City officials said the city council will likely hold a public hearing and consider the Dumbarton TOD at its next meeting, Sept. 8.
