Week in Review: Mayor Retires, End of the World

Newark will soon say farewell to longtime Mayor David Smith, who announced Wednesday afternoon that he will not seek re-election in November. In an interview with Patch, Smith said its time for him to start working on his "bucket list."

The End of the World is here, according to Bay Area preacher Harold Camping. The 89-year-old Family Radio evangelist  was Saturday.

The search for a superintendent for Newark schools remained a significant topic in the news this week. During a Tuesday board meeting, the school board was divided in for the district's next leader.

Bay to Breakers was popular with Newark residents, and a handful who ran of their divisions. The fastest was Travis Turner who completed the 7.5-mile run in 47:26, and the highest ranking was Carlos Zarate, who placed second in the 70- to 79-year-old male division.

Four TriCity men started a 3,092-mile bike ride from California to Florida Thursday morning as part of their goal to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. They also started h so readers can follow their journey.
