Week in Review: Man Injured in Shooting; Vice Mayor Interviews for County Supervisor Seat

A 20-year-old man was hospitalized briefly following on May 26, police said. According to police, officers responded to a report of a disturbance with possible gunshots at a loud party on Long Street at about 1:30 a.m. and found a 20-year-old man leaving the scene with a facial injury sustained from a gunshot. He was treated at a local hospital and then released, police said. Authorities said there were a “significant number” of documented Norteno gang members at the party and that because witnesses were uncooperative, no arrests were made.

Despite three gang-related stabbings and shootings in Newark during the month of May, authorities released numbers that show that . Since 2002, Newark police have responded to 618 gang-related crimes, according to statistics from Newark police. Since 2006, gang-related crimes have decreased by 67 percent – with 96 occurring in 2006 and 31 in 2011.

Newark Vice Mayor Ana Apodaca is now on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors that became vacant with former Supervisor Nadia Lockyer’s , according to media reports. The Oakland Tribune reported that while five finalists were chosen, only four were interviewed after Lockyer’s predecessor Gail Steele withdrew her application from the pool of applicants. The board plans to make an appointment Tuesday.

A superior court judge ruled Thursday to to the attorney of a Fremont man charged with the murder of Newark Memorial High School Osana Futi. Those documents are said to be about the slain 18-year-old. Abraham Ibrahim Hade, 18, of Fremont, faces one count of in connection Futi’s killing. He pleaded to that charge on May 23.

Zumba studio owner Cheryl Louie talked with Newark Patch recently to unveil the health benefits and energy behind the Latin-inspired fitness program. Louie owns where numerous classes are held throughout the week. And the classes are suitable for all ages and shapes, she said.
